Can't send activation emails phpbb3

Hello all, I am running Turnkey phpbb3 appliance at home on my workstation, its working fine except its not sending activation emails to users. I am behind a router and www and smtp ports are forwarded.

I see this error in mail.log

Jan 23 01:23:25 phpbb postfix/qmgr[4115]: 822BA301D9: from=<www-data@UNKNOWN>, size=1353, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Jan 23 01:23:35 phpbb postfix/smtp[4479]: 822BA301D9: to=<xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com>, relay=none, delay=10, delays=0.12/0.06/10/0, dsn=4.4.3, status=deferred (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=hotmail.com type=MX: Host not found, try again)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

DNS issue?

Host or domain name not found. Name service error

This looks like a DNS issue.  Is your appliance able to resolve names?

What happens if you do ping yahoo.com?

That's what I get.

That's what I get.  Weird!

But anyway it resolved yahoo.com, I guess the DNS is fine

PING yahoo.com (209.191.93.53) 56(84) bytes of data.
--- yahoo.com ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 5006ms

Any Ideas?

Why it doesn't send emails to forum members?

Sorry this is not very helpful

It definately sounds like a networking/DNS issue but you said DNS seems to be fine. Very strange...

If your TKL phpBB appliance can resolve names (ie DNS working) and there is nothing blocking it on the network then it should just work.

Perhaps check that your router doesn't have some sort of firewall built in that is blocking your appliance from sending mail. Have you tried other email addresses? (ie not hotmail ones just to double check).

I have recently set this appliance up myself (from VM image - running in VMware Server on WinServer2k3) and I can confirm that the appliance sends registration emails to a Google Apps hosted domain no worries.
