Regarding the issue you are reporting, I can't reproduce it? I just tested and I can change the language to 'es' in the Tracks UI and it appears to work fine?! I tried logging out and back in again and still it just works...

Obviously you aren't the only one experiencing this issue, but there must be something specific that you (and the others hitting this issue) are (or aren't) doing and/or something that I am (or aren't) doing to not be able to reproduce it.

So I suggest that you start a new thread in the support section and provide more information about your install (which version, where it is running, etc) and step-by-step instructions to reproduce the issue. If I can reproduce the issue, then I'm sure I can fix it.

Having said that, if you want to use TKLBAM you will need a (separate) TurnKey Hub account. Also, please be aware, that whilst TKLBAM can still be useful in transferring data between instances, depending on the age of your old server, you may well still need to make some adjustments manually. Please check out the TKLBAM doc page for a bit more context and detail.

Re your question, TBH, I'm not completely sure what the issue might be. I'm a Linux daily driver and test our ISOs in KVM, VirtualBox and VMware WorkStation (all on Linux - Debian to be precise) and they "just work" for me?! FWIW I have hit intermittent issues with the Grub install step when installing on VMware, but that can be worked around by selecting "manual" and entering the device name manually (e.g. '/dev/sda'). AFAIK Qubes OS uses KVM.

I suggest that you start a new thread and provide some more detail about what you tried and what specific issues you hit, e.g. explicit error messages, etc.

If you are running in an LXC container (e.g. on Proxmox), you will need to run it in an unprivileged container with "nesting" enabled. Without that, Redis will have issues starting.

Otherwise, please start a new thread describing your issue(s) - the info you can give the better. If I can reproduce the issue, there is a really good chance I can work out how to resolve it (or at least hack around it).

PS apologies about ridiculously slow response. I've been very distracted over the last month (mostly non-TurnKey stuff - but I have been doing some work on the upcoming v18.x release).

If you want a Hub API key, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub.

Please note that depending on how old your server is, you will likely still need to do some manual tweaks to get your data migrated and your new server up and running. The TKLBAM doc page (scroll down to third paragraph, between the horizontal lines) - gives some guidance on the expectations you can have of a TKLBAM data migration.

If it doesn't just work (which seems likely if it's quite old), please do not hesitate to open a new support thread. The more info you can give me about the appliance and the migration, and as much detail as possible about the actual issue - the easier it will be to assist you.

If you want to enable TKLBAM (our remote, encrypted backup tool) or other TurnKey Hub features, you'll need to sign up for a separate TurnKey Hub account (the Hub has a completely separate user database).

Having said that, you can use Webmin without a Hub API key. You can use the left hand menu to jump straight to other pages. Also our Webmin doc page notes how to change the default landing page (regardless of whether you use TKLBAM or not, you may wish to set a different default landing page). Hopefully that helps?!

Thanks for your kind words, although I'd be interested to hear more about the issues you had getting Nextcloud up and running. It should "just work"!? I'm glad to hear that WordPress was a bit more "TurnKey" for you.

Regarding the API key, that is optional. For self hosted servers, the Hub "Servers" are probably not that useful, but the remote encrypted backups (aka TKLBAM) should work from anywhere so long as your server has outgoing internet. FWIW TKLBAM can be used to migrate data between servers too. If you have any further Hub related questions, please don't hesitate to ask (here and/or via Hub support).

WRT to "burning" the ISO to USB, it should "just work"!? On Linux it's super easy, you literally just copy the ISO to the USB device. E.g. if the USB is /dev/sdb (make sure you use the right device and be sure to unmount the USB if it's already mounted) then this should "just work":

cp /path/to/turnkey-zoneminder-17.2-bullseye-amd64.iso /dev/sdb

Having said that, my guess is that you aren't using Linux, so that's likely not of much value. I have never heard of, nor used Balena etcher - but a quick google suggests that it should be more than capable of doing what is required. I haven't used it for years, but Rufus was always pretty good in my experience.

Our ISO is pretty basic and the fact that you tried 2 options suggests to me that the issue may be that your hardware is too new for our installer. If you're still interested in floowing up on this, please start a new thread and provide some more info on the issue you're encoutnering, including the hardware you're trying to us, any specific error messages you see, etc. Please also feel free to attach screenshots to your post (please note that you've done that and I'll tweak them so they display).

Whilst our ISO does support hardware install, it doesn't have great hardware support and doesn't support UEFI boot at all. Most older hardware will allow you to change to a "legacy boot" mode (and you'll also need to disable "Secure Boot" too). So I'd try that (you'll need to poke around in your UEFI/BIOS for the relevant options).

If it seems that hardware incompatibility is the issue, then in my opinion, your best bet is to install it as a VM. If you have some hardware that you particularly want to use for this project, I'd recommend installing a hypervisor, such as ProxmoxVE. Then just install TurnKey Zoneminder as a VM. Note that on Proxmox you could download our LXC template instead, but I recommend a "proper" VM for minimal fuss.

For the DDNS service, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub. Note that you'll need an AWS account and need to start a free trial of the most popular paid plans we offer. However, you can cancel the free trial by downgrading both the server and backup plans to free.

Another option is that under the hood, TurnKey is based on Debian GNU/Linux. So any DDNS client should be an option. Many DDNS providers and even some Domain registrars provide their own client and/or recommend a specific client.

Hello, I am in fact a real person.

In 2020 I bought a used PC and setup Linux on it and docker and I've used it ever since to manage some applications SSH so i could login my network, OpenVPN so I could securely access my systems, then I installed filerun & nextcloud to share files securely, and I have put NPM in front to handle web traffic.  Plus it does a bunch of other stuff.

I have found that it gets a little challenging to manage all of the data & backups because every docker container sets up its own database and that data is everywhere.  Its convenient to quickly standup, but more challenging to manage.  Similarly I have a bunch of raspberries doing things like downloading files, and acting as my backup server (rsync over SSH)

So I bought another used desktop last week and decided to try Proxmox on it so I could learn about that.  I thought it was just about VMs then I discovered LXC and I am learning about that now and that led me here.

So nothing too serious but that is why I attempted to create an account.

It is perhaps worth noting, that whilst MineOS is based on TurnKey, we didn't create it. I did speak with the dev who created it about making it an "official" TurnKey image, but the conversation stalled and never got revisited.

So if you have Minecraft specific questions, there's a good chance I won't be able to help, but I can assist with underlying TurnKey Linux questions.

As you may already be aware, we have an AWS based SaaS platform called the TurnKey Hub. The Hub incorporates management of backups/data generated via our built in automated encrypted backup tool, TKLBAM, as well as a user friendly platform for launching and managing TurnKey "Cloud Servers" (AWS EC2 instances). That has a separate user DB, so you'll need to sign up to that separately. If you go ahead with that on one of the paid plans, you are then eligible for our "paid" support (accessible within the Hub, or email via support AT turnkeylinux.org).

Good luck with it all and I look forward to hearing more about how your setup progresses and/or any pain points you hit that perhaps we can improve on.

25+ years in IT, have used AWS, GCP, Azure, but never really an on prem virtualization system.  So I'm new to Vmware, Proxmox, etc.  I'm setting up a Proxmox lab with 8 hosts totalling 448 cores, 2tb ram, 16tb ssd, 200tb hdd (cephfs&rbd), a handful of Tik switches and routers and more wires than I count.

I started doing some trial VM and container installations and quickly grew weary at the notion of installing a bunch of linux machines from scratch just to run basic workloads like lamp and ansible semaphore.  In comes turnkey, wow how easy!

I anticipate participating in the forum throughout my process that I hope will eventually grow into a semi-production environment backed up by a few AWS instances that will fire if I have a catastrophic event affecting my physical hosts.

On with the show!

I am new to Turnkey - having just deployed Proxmox 8.0.3 over the weekend.  Proxmox has a great selection of Turnkey LXC container templates and several are of great interest, including turnkey-ansible, zoneminder, and samba domain controller.

I was testing TrueNAS Scale but it seems Proxmox + Turnkey is a better combination of services.

Firstly, to clarify, you don't NEED to use TKLBAM, but it is what we recommend and technically the only method we support (despite that, I'll happily give you "best effort" support).

If you want to give TKLBAM a go, you'll need to sign up for the TurnKey Hub separately (the user DB is separate to the website).

It's worth being aware, that under the hood, TurnKey is Debian (v16.x = Debian 10/Buster; v17.x = Debian 11/Bullseye, he upcoming v18.x = Debian 12/Bookworm). So a "Debian style in place upgrade" is an alternate option. It's not as smooth as it could be (e.g. you'll need to manually download the updated TurnKey apt signing key), but it is possible. I hope to make it smoother in future, but not sure when I'll get to that, my todo list is huge!

I recently setup a home lab to play and learn with!  I was told to try running containers with Proxmox, which is where I found out about TurnkeyLinux.  So far things are going well , except I noticed today that when I try to run the apt update command, I continuously get stuck at "connecting to archive.turnkeylinux".  Is the update server down, or am I doing something wrong?  It seemed to be working fine for the last 2 or 3 days, but I am still very new to this.

As for helping out, we're always keen for members of the community getting involved and helping out. I suggest that you familiarize your self first, then scratch your own itch (e.g. something that you think would be better, a feature we should add, etc). Having said that, it's probably a good idea to have a bit of a chat about your plans/thoughts before putting in too much work (just in case we disagree with you about your suggested addition).

That is as intended. We mask the generic stunnel service and use a service template (the at symbol denotes a service template - i.e. stunnel4@.service) to provide an individual stunnel instance per service (i.e. stunnel4@webmin & stunnel4@shellinabox).

Please check the status of the individual services as I noted in my previous post.

     Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit stunnel4.service is masked.)
     Active: inactive (dead)

So stunnel4 is masked, webmin depends on stunnel4, nothing will start and it's pretty normal isn't it?

FWIW the Samba web based admin is provided by the Samba Webmin module. It is not that useful for AD DC management (IIRC you can restart the service and do a few other bits and pieces). But the recommendation (by Samba) for AD management is via the Windows RSAT tool. I.e. install that on one of your Windows machines and use that to maintain and manage your AD.

Having said that, obviously that doesn't exclude the fact that Webmin and Webshell (aka shellinabox) aren't working (and they should be!). Thanks for providing the info you did. It looks like none of the required services are running?! That is certainly not expected. They should "just work".

You could try check the services for info on why they aren't running, to check each service individually:

systemctl status stunnel4@webmin
systemctl status stunnel4@shellinabox
systemctl status shellinabox
systemctl status webmin

You could also try manually starting them, by re-running the above commands, except replace 'status' with 'start' (or 'restart').

Even if manually starting them works, I'd recommend that you reboot to check that they come back up. If they don't (or they don't start at all) please open a new support thread and share the output of the status commands above. Another thing that might assist is to check for more info from the journal. E.g. to get the last 50 lines of webmin related info from the journal:

journalctl -u webmin -n 50 --no-pager

You can rerun that command substituting 'webmin' for the other named services (e.g. 'shellinabox', etc)

Feel free to write that to a file (i.e. append ' > ~/webmin.log' to the above line and you should find a file called 'webmin.log' in your home dir) and upload it somewhere or attach to the thread (only the first post in a thread allows attachments). Although please explicitly note if you do that (the site has bug that means the attached files aren't publicly visible - although are publicly accessible).

Hopefully that gets you going in the right direction. If not, please do open a new support thread and we'll go from there. Please note that my forum response times are slower than ideal currently, but I will answer all threads (eventually...) and hopefully things should be back to normal (responses within a day or 2) soonish. Please also note that if you are a paid Hub user (or would like paid support - even if self hosting) please reach out to me via support@turnkeylinux.org and we can chat...

I'm Adnan, web and system engineer currently working as an IT admin in a school in Paris. I'm not an expert in Windows Server or AD but we don't have any user management (nor a lot of resources to share) so I was interested in the domain controller template for Proxmox.

Well, I installed it, set it up and was able to join a freshly installed windows 10 VM to the domain. Now, I have access to the home page of the http service, but webmin, web shell, samba, etc… None are accessible ?

Did I miss something ?

Hello, I built a new Turnkey Linux server (with Apache and MySQL) on version 17.1. After the build I put in some general configurations such as changing the host (/etc/host), the config file, and a few other general configurations to set different parameters i will be using for connection ( /usr/share/tomcat9/bin/setenv.sh). When I try to connect to the RMI port, I am getting errors that the connection is refused.

I am getting this error both from external (other servers) and from internal (the same Turnkey server). When using Turnkey Linux 16.X that i have worked with in the past and tomcat6 or tomcat7, these configurations have worked and was just wondering if anyone could provide any pointers.

For my "/usr/share/tomcat9/bin/setenv.sh" configuration below is what i have. This is the only aspect i am thinking would cause the issue but i could be blind as well.

export JPDA_TRANSPORT=dt_socket

Please note that if you want a Hub API key (for remote encrypted backups) then please sign up to the TurnKey Hub (the 2 systems have different user databases). If you are self hosting and your data isn't important (e.g. you are just testing) or you have an alternate remote backup regime, then you can skip the API key step at first boot.

My guess is that your time is too far out of whack (i.e. wrong day judging by the message) to automatically update. I suggest setting the time on your guest first (so it's really close) then retry.

If you continue to have issues, please post in your other thread (rather than replying here) or start a new thread.

My name is Michael and I am still learning Linux, but am pretty comfortable with it. I run Proxmox with several containers and a couple VMs. My current project is phasing out Windows products in favor of Linux/Unix based solutions. I have configured a domain controller with via Turnkey and that seems to work well. So, I configured a contained for a file server. It works, but I wanted to bind the file server to the domain controller so that I may use ACLs because there will still be a couple Windows 10 machines on my network. 

However, I am encountering issues syncing NTP services to the domain controller via the webmin console. I get the following error: 

NTP time synchronization failed : 18 Jul 21:09:28 ntpdate[2943]: Can't adjust the time of day: Operation not permitted

I am also, unable to bind the file server to the domain controller and have been researching it for the past couple days.

FWIW the lack of formatting was because you weren't logged in. By default the formatting is (mostly) stripped from non-logged in users.

Jeremy, thank you so much for the detailed response! I really appreciate it.

Main reason I want to use Caddy is just so that every service is setup the same way and it's easy to understand. Caddy is basically the same as Nginx in that regard, it's an incredibly easy to use reverse proxy that automatically deals with SSL for you(I believe through certbot using Let's Encrypt).

I think I'll have a look at maybe doing what you said with moving the certs to the server though. I noticed that some things were not great when trying to use Caddy, the sign in form for example was still HTTP, despite the site being HTTPS. Not great!

Will have a shot and if things don't work out I'll open a thread!

By default, our "software appliances" are distributed with a self signed TLS cert (ships with a shared self-signed cert, but a unique one is generated on firstboot). As a complete aside, whilst you're using the LXC container, all our appliances are also available in ISO too (if find yourself wanting a "proper" VM anytime).

Anyway, FYI we don't use certbot. When we integrated Let's Encrypt certs we went with dehydrated instead (smaller footprint and leaks less info). By default, it isn't enabled so it won't actually do anything unless you enable it. If you already have enabled it, simply disable the updates (interactively via confconsole, or remove the cron job).

As for the Apache config, that is entirely up to you. One upon a time reverse proxying via vanilla http was the norm, but these days, it's much less common. That is especially the case with server systems such as TurnKey that are designed to be moved about (e.g. a dev server, then shift to a production server, etc). It's the data is what's important, not the server itself.

Having said that, I completely understand wanting to manage the SSL/TLS termination of the "proper" certs on the central public facing reverse proxy. I'm unfamiliar with Caddy, but personally, I'd be inclined to just explicitly trust the self signed cert (or regenerate a cert with a CA key trusted by Caddy). FWIW I always just use Nginx for a reverse proxy, so I can't give you any specific advice on that, but I'd assume that Caddy would support that sort of configuration?

Actually, I just did a quick google and it looks like Caddy has a self generated/signed CA built in! So if you use that to generate keys for your container, then drop them in /etc/ssl/private/cert.pem & /etc/ssl/private/cert.key respectively (& restart Apache) and you should be good! :)

Regardless, if you do want to push ahead and host only via vanilla http, then edit the Apache conf (/etc/apache2/sites-available/concrete.conf) and remove the http => https redirect on login. I.e. remove these lines (currently 8 & 9) from the http (port 80):

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^(.*)/login$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

There is more stuff you could trim out if you wanted, but none of it should get in the way so I'll leave that one with you for now. If you want some pointers, please open a new thread.

I have a separate server running Caddy that handles all traffic proxying and SSL/HTTPS cert generation and what not. The problem I have is that your containers are fantastic and try to do the same thing, which unfortunately causes issues.

How can I disable automatic SSL redirect, certbot, and everything to do with SSL on the turnkey container?

Apologies on my delayed response, I just found this unfinished draft and thought that I better finish it! FWIW it's a wet and rainy here in Tassie (Tasmania, Australia) today too...

To use TKLBAM, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub. Please be aware that by default you start a 14 day free trial of our most popular paid plans. If you have no desire to run cloud servers, be sure to cancel the free trial for that (by downgrading the server plan to free). If you forget and get charged, please downgrade ASAP and ask via support for a refund.

Also, please be aware, that migration may not "just work", but TKLBAM can still be a very useful tool to transferring data. If you search about the forums, hopefully you might find some examples of partial aka "staged" restores. Please have a read through the TKLBAM doc page. You'll need to start with initialization, run a backup on your old system, then restore to your new system.

Please open a new thread if you have any questions and/or need a hand.

Also, it's worth noting that the Debian OS (10/Buster) of TurnKey v16.x is supported by Debian LTS until mid 2024. Whilst there may be many open CVEs against included software, I would expect all of them to be relatively minor and/or mitigated against by default config. TBH, some of them are ridiculous! Having said that, keeping your servers up to date is definitely a good idea and I highly recommend that you do it. I'm just saying that you probably shouldn't freak out about CVEs until you've actually looked into them (e.g. lots of software can be configured to do dangerous things - that doesn't necessarily mean that it's "vulnerable" or is "insecure").

I'm looking to get my account activated to allow us to use TKLBAM to migrate the config from our old TKL Fileserver to the new instance I've spun up.

We recently ran some vulnerability scanning and were horrified at just how far behind we actually are!

Our old instance is on Debian 10 running webmin 1.970 (turnkey-fileserver-16.1-buster-amd64) and we need to migrate the data and config from there onto the new Debian 11 instance (turnkey-fileserver-17.1-bullseye-amd64).

Hopefully the above is sufficient to allow my account to be activated and I can begin to take part in the community discussion.

I did find a relevant thread on their old forums that might assist? Otherwise, perhaps try asking on their new forums (google group). It might also be worth checking the (old) docs (apparently they are still relevant).

Regarding your specific question, I think it might be best for us to move to a new thread as I suspect that there will be some back and forth (and better to have that in a new dedicated thread, rather than here in this thread).

Regardless, to give you a start, I'll share some info. Under the hood, TurnKey is Debian. When we create a new release, we start with a minimalist Debian base and pre-install the required software. Where possible, we use software already packaged in Debian - direct from Debian apt repositories. We also provide a few custom tools that we create and maintain ourselves (and distribute via our own custom apt repo). Beyond that, we install other required software via whatever means is required. Where possible, we follow upstream recommendations, so you should generally be able to follow their upgrade instructions.

So if the current TurnKey appliance you are running provides the appropriate dependencies for the newer version of Nextcloud, then you should be able to just upgrade Nextcloud (on your current server). If the current server does not already provide the required dependencies, then either you'll need to use a newer version as your base (and migrate your existing data) or install the required dependencies on your current server.

When it comes time to update your underlying OS, you can either use TKLBAM (or some other data backup and migration tool) to migrate your existing data to a new TurnKey version of the same server. Or you can use a Debian style "in place" upgrade (to upgrade the OS to a newer Debian version). Technically we don't support the latter, but we will always provide "best effort" support for TurnKey users.

So I suggest that you start a new thread detailing which specific TurnKey version you are running (if unsure, run 'turnkey-version') and exactly what end point you'd like to get to and I can give you all the info I have... :)

I don't understand how I can go to the latest version of the nextcloud turnkey linux. I am usually able to find the answer by researching, but made this account because I am not sure if I will be able to upgrade properly/safely/with the latest instructions.

Regarding our dynamic DNS solution, that requires a TurnKey Hub account. Although it's worth being aware, that under the hood, TurnKey is Debian (v17.x = Debian 11/Bullseye; upcoming v18.x = Debian 12/Bookworm) so there are lots of other options to explore if you wish. Not that I'm trying to talk you out of signing up to the Hub (I think it's pretty awesome), but just to make it clear that you're not "locked" into a TurnKey ecosystem - just because you use TurnKey! :)

For what it's worth, you can skip the "Hub API key" step if you wish.

If you do want to sign up to the Hub for remote Backups (and/or Cloud Servers), please sign up to the TurnKey Hub (requires AWS account).

Although it's perhaps worth noting that whilst IMO a Hub account is a good thing (surprise surprise! :) it's optional.

Apologies for really slow response. It's probably no consolation to you, but I'm currently trying to keep my head down to push out the next major version release ASAP.

TBH, I have no idea why it would be timing out!? Although the default download links are a "round robin", so I suggest retrying. Also, if you haven't already tried, you could go to the mirror directly. If your problems persist, then the only other thing I can suggest is checking one of our other mirrors.

Note that our mirror doesn't use https, so be sure to also download the hash file (you should find it directly below the template that you want) and follow the instructions to verify your download. Proxmox normally does that automatically for you, but if you download manually you'll need to verify yourself. Once you've verified the template is legit, then move it to Proxmox's /var/lib/vz/template/cache/ dir (you can delete the hash file once you've verified it).

I am a very new user of Proxmox 8 & I'm trying to setup a file server to share with Windows 10 so I can move my movie collection from Windows to Proxmox.  I intend to then setup Plex and run it to serve my household smart TVs.

My issue is that while downloading the Turnkey file server template, Proxmox times out while downloading debian-11-turnkey-fileserver_17.1.1_amd64tar.gz.

I also navigated to the index page using Chrome [in Windows] & tried to download it [the file mentioned above] and got similar results.

Both my Linux server & Windows PC have ample room for the 500Mb file- 2Tbs & the Linux server is empty except for Proxmox.

Please help!!

Re your NFS issues, my guess is that it's an LXC config issue. AFAIK, it should work, but the config is quite specific. We probably should document it. There is an issue on our issue tracker that discusses it to some degree and there are some that have confirmed that it can work.

If you want it to "just work", then it may be easier to just install the server to a "proper" VM (install with the ISO - downloadable from the relevant appliance page).

Alternatively, please read through that thread on GitHub and hopefully that might give you enough hints to get you over the line. It'd be great to document this better for future users, so please do share anything that you discover. If you do do that, it's probably best to start a new thread - or even post in the docs.

I am looking to implement a new home lab based around using Proxmox VE 8.0.x and a set of containers, covering LXC, Docker and / or Podman to try and update my IT skills. I am a former IT professional, who came through late 1970's, 1980's and first early 1990's as a develop, application and data designer/ architect, then moved into Business Process Management (BPM) / Reengineering, then on to Enterprise Architecture and back to BPM and Business Architecture.

As I came closer to the end of my career, I am looking to develop and develop online training courses relating to BPM, Process Automation and Enterprise Architecture. To do this, I am wanting to implement A set of "containerized" applications on a home lab to expand my skill set, not only to implement these applications, but potentially add potential skills to add to my proposed training program.

Your experience and plans sound really interesting.

If you are interested in developing TurnKey based appliances, then you may be interested in TKLDev - our build tool in a box (it's what we use to develop and build our appliance library). If your end goal is an LXC container, then the process is a little convoluted. That is because by default, it only builds ISOs. We then run the ISO through Buildtasks. We use bt-iso to build the initial ISO and generate the associated metadata, then bt-container builds the LXC container from the ISO.

If you develop anything cool (even if it's not TurnKey based, but especially if it is) please feel free to share (perhaps a thread in "General"?).

Anyway, good luck with it all and hopefully see you about on the forums.

i will most likely spawn LXC containers for redis and postgres.  I want to do self education about mongo and rabbitmq/kafka, so will most likely attempt LXC container creation for those.  Also looking to possibly create a LXC for pihole, unless one exists but i haven't gotten there yet since I'm still stuck learning opnsense.

Hopefully that is more than enough to prove i am a legitimate user of turnkey with only use and improvement in mind.

I'm glad to hear that you've been finding our Observium appliance useful.

Well, first up is the mandatory plug for TKLBAM (our custom backup and data migration tool). It's pre-installed in all of our servers and can easily be linked to the TurnKey Hub. If you need any assistance with the TurnKey Hub, please hit me up via the Hub's "in app" support (blue icon towards the bottom right of screen) or the Feedback link (in the top bar), or via support AT turnkeylinux.org (please either send from the same email as your Hub account, or note the email address of your Hub account). TKLBAM can also be used independent of the Hub, but that's a bit more mucking around (ask in a new thread if you want more detail on that).

Beyond TKLBAM, it's worth remembering that TurnKey is Debian under the hood. So any Debian compatible Linux backup tool should also work.

Finally, if you're knowledgeable and keen enough, you can generate your own backup script. Th details of what needs to be backed up can be seen in the Observium docs (note that is explicitly for data migration, but the data it notes equally applies to a backup).

No matter which way you go, I urge you to test your backups before you need them!

I recently installed Observium and so far have really enjoyed the product, however my concern is how do I backup the database files should I need to recover from a crash or restore the databases without having to restore the entire VM or rebuild the VM from scratch, I'd like to capture our current database as it currently stands.

Re your Zoneminder questions, that is because in v17.0 & v17.1 we installed Zoneminder from the Debian repos. Where possible, that is usually the preferable path. Whilst the software version stays the same (as you've noticed), security issues are generally addressed via a backported patch. You don't get the latest version but it should remain secure. However, it seemed that the Debian Security team downgraded support for Zoneminder and it wasn't maintained in the way that we had hoped.

So from v17.2 onwards we install newer Zoneminder direct from the Zoneminder apt repo.

In theory, you should be able to add the repo and update to the newer Zoneminder. However, I'm not 100% sure it will "just work", so please be sure to have a snapshot of your current server before proceeding (backups such as TKLBAM are good for data, but a snapshot of the whole OS is much better for winding back changes like I am about to suggest). So if this is a VM, use whatever tools allow you to take a snapshot of the OS (so you can rollback to where you are if need be). If it's a bare metal install, then Clonezilla is a good tool (to clone your existing install).

Then download the key like this (assuming running as root; if not run 'sudo su -' before starting to open a root shell session):

cat archive-keyring.gpg | gpg --dearmor > /usr/share/keyrings/zoneminder.gpg
rm archive-keyring.gpg

Now write the sources.list (still as root):

Fingers crossed, it will "just work", if not then please open a new thread and provide as much info as possible about what isn't working, especially including any explicit error messages you see. Copy/pasting text messages (e.g. terminal error messages) is great, although screenshots also work too. If you do go the screenshot route, please be aware that only the first post of a thread can have attachments. Attach your screenshots there and note in the post that they are attached (sorry its a quirk of our site that the attachments aren't displayed - I'll apply a tweak to your post so that they can be seen - if you want to update additional screeshots later, then edit your first post, attach them and again let me know).

Hopefully that gets you there, otherwise as I say, please open a new support thread and we'll go from there.

You mention wanting an API key. To get one of those, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub. Whilst a significant component of that is "Cloud Servers" (which I'm guessing you probably don't want if you're happy self hosting), but it also supports remote, encrypted "Backups" (that's what the API key step is on firstboot; linking your server to the Hub for remote encrypted backups). If you do sign up to that, please be sure to cancel the free trial of "Cloud Bronze" (assuming you don't plan to run any cloud servers). If you have any questions regarding the Hub, please do not hesitate to access the Hub's "in app" support for any Hub specific questions.

Having said that, whilst I encourage use of TKLBAM (our built in backup tool - which links to the Hub), if your data isn't important (e.g. testing, hobby, etc) or you have an alternate remote backup regime in place, then linking TKLBAM to the Hub is not compulsory. You can skip that step if you wish.

It needs to be installed within the container. Personally I mainly just use the Proxmox UI for install and use native SSH to maintain my containers and VMs, but using the Proxmox web UI is also fine (e.g. via a Proxmox NoVNC window).

Thanks, I had seen that. I installed it in proxmox shell, was that the correct place? Or was I supposed to run that in the wireguard shell? 

FWIW guest posts usually require approval, so that was at least part of the issue.

Re Wireguard, if you're using the Proxmox, you may already be aware that you need to manually install the 'wireguard-tools' package to make it all work. By a gross oversight by us, it gets removed during the template build process and we didn't realise until we had already started work on the next major release. FWIW the ISO should "just work" and the new (upcoming) v18.0 build should also "just work" OOTB.

Although I should note that our current GitLab appliance has a nasty bug (workaround is noted there too). We hope to have a new release (without that bug) in coming months, but It's a beast of a thing and has proven to be a very hard appliance to maintain, so it's not one we're prioritizing (not that we're avoiding it either, just focusing more on other appliances with higher leverage).

Also, it's perhaps worth sharing that if you don't need/want all the bells and whistles that GitLab offers and are just looking for a web UI for collaboration on git versioned projects, then I'd recommend Gitea (it's what I use personally). Not that GitLab is bad, but it's incredibly complex, with lots of moving parts and is VERY heavy on resources. Even with significant resources allocated, I've found it to be quite load and unresponsive. Gitea is much lighter weight than GitLab (requires less resources, by a significant factor) and is much more responsive. Not to mention, easier on the eye (in my opinion at least). It can be integrated with CI/CD if you want/need that. Although unfortunately, the only standalone one we have is Jenkins - Jenkins does have a Gitea plugin - but Jenkins is a bit of a learning curve if you're not already familiar with it).

Absolutely love Proxmox! I used it at my last job to host a test environment for any software/system changes. Had an entire Active Directory domain with server and workstations and pfSense for DHCP (and a lot of other things) and it was a lot of fun. As soon as I can get another server or machine that's the first thing I'm gonna do.

Like many others here, I just recently got into Proxmox. I'm self-hosting several homelab services. And I would like to start hosting my own gitlab instance using the turnkey gitlab LXC image. So I'm needing a new account approval ;-)

Re your download question, unfortunately there is not any method for downloading our LXC/Proxmox templates via the TurnKey website. They're only available either direct from the mirror(s) or within Proxmox - either the web UI or the pveam CLI tool. For what it's worth, they're all stored on the mirror anyway (the website download links redirect to download from the mirror anyway). The path to the LXC Proxmox templates is: http://mirror.turnkeylinux.org/turnkeylinux/images/proxmox/.

FWIW the mirror URLs can't be HTTPS unless either we share the private key with mirror providers (which is a really bad idea IMO), or redirect to the real domain of the mirrors (which I'm not even sure they all have HTTPS certs? But could be the best way to go?). I did have a bit of a look a couple of years ago and it was impractical at that point. We'll revisit that as some point in the future.

We also have plans to do a major overhaul of the website at some point in the (hopefully not too distant) future. I've noted your question as a feature request.

wow, thanks for the quick and well formatted response. Indeed, you are most likely correct about the corrupted downloads, must have something to do with my WiFi device, i just did a debian download over ethernet and it checksum'ed OK. Gotta be my n/w. Sorry for the bother.

Unfortuately, i dont have the previous downloads except the last one, to check for consistency of the hash in the corrupted downloads. 

Its great that the, missing public key url, bug surfaced and could be fixed. 

I used this mirror for Proxmox containers and noted the absence of a security cert, hence the need to strictly verify the download's hash and signing key.               http://mirror.turnkeylinux.org/turnkeylinux/images/proxmox/?C=M;O=D

I will do downloads this week for the lamp and wordpress containers and report back any success or failure. Hopefully, my n/w, or service provider n/w won't keep reconnecting and introduce any extra bits in the download.

Thanks for reporting, but I can't reproduce it? I've just downloaded it locally and the one I downloaded appears to be ok. I'll post my results below, but my guess is that the image you've downloaded is corrupt. From your report, it seems that you retired with the same result. Out of interest, were the bad checksums consistent? Or did you get a different one on your second attempt?

As for the GPG (RSA) key, your report has highlighted a bug that I'd previously missed (and no one else has previously reported), so thanks again for reporting! I'll cover that more further down, but first the checksums.

The one I just downloaded has correct SHA256 checksum:

$ sha256sum -c debian-11-turnkey-wordpress_17.1-1_amd64.tar.gz.hash
debian-11-turnkey-wordpress_17.1-1_amd64.tar.gz: OK

Re the file However as I hinted above, it appears that there is a bug in the text and the signing key download url is not noted as it should be. The output you've noted is expected if you do not have the public key locally. The first line in the step 1 code is the line that should import the public key, but it's missing the URL. I'm pretty sure that's why that bit failed (it works fine for me, but I already have the public key - so again that's expected).

The good news is that it appears that the hash file you have is the one we provide (and not something malicious). The key that we signed v17.x release hash files with is indeed "DD83FEBBE256B92A29FC1B821E487A4631D6FEB6". Hence why I jumped to the corruption conclusion.

So you do have an invalid template, but the hash file appears to be ok (except for the above mentioned bug). Exactly where the corruption exists/occurs, I can't be 100% sure. If you'd got the same (wrong) checksum from 2 separate downloads of the same template, then that suggests that probably the image on the mirror you connected to is corrupt (and that unluckily you connected to the same mirror when you tried again - or it's corrupt on multiple mirrors - which seems highly unlikely, albeit not impossible). If the checksum was different for each image, then the corruption is likely local; either in transit (perhaps a badly behaving internet proxy?) or perhaps on disk?

Regarding checking the signature, The first line of code in the hash file (with the missing text) should be:

$ curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/turnkeylinux/common/18.x/keys/tkl-bullseye-images.asc | gpg --import

Note the missing URL between "curl" and the pipe ("|"). If you run that first, then this is what you should get when checking the sig:

$ gpg --verify debian-11-turnkey-wordpress_17.1-1_amd64.tar.gz.hash

I've just started playing around with Proxmox on a home server. When i tried downloading the latest lamp and wordpress zip archive containers through Proxmox they always error out with a checksum mismatch. Finally did a manual download and checked the hashes they dont match with the ones in the *.hash file. Could you check if these are indeed signed correctly.

The checksum doesnt match with the one in the hash file and neither does the RSA fingerprint

Hi Ozzie, I've already replied directly to your Hub support post. But for the benefit of others that may find themselves in the same situation, I'll repost what I replied directly to you a little earlier:

I'm not sure why you got a random email out of the blue? However, I can confirm that you are not in our billing system and so are not being charged.

My guess is that you had a really old TurnKey Hub account. When the Hub first launched (about 14 years ago) billing was done via AWS "DevPay". When AWS shut that down, we devised a migration process and all users who wished to keep their servers and/or backups were required to migrate to the new billing system. Eventually AWS shut down DevPay and all DevPay backed servers and backups were destroyed. As a last ditch effort to limit risk of data loss (e.g. if users missed all the emails both us and AWS sent out) we stored all remaining backups (at our expense). We kept them for over a year, but unclaimed data was eventually deleted.

So bottom line, considering you got this email, your Hub account must still exist, however I assume that it's still backed by DevPay, thus while the Hub probably still thinks the server(s) exist (hence the email) they don't. Feel free to have a look by logging into your Hub account[1]. Please note that if my understanding is correct, then you will likely be greeted by a page telling you to "migrate" (which won't work).

If that seems reasonable and likely to you, then probably the best course of action is for us to just nuke your existing Hub account. Even if you want a new Hub account, starting from scratch is probably better/easier.

If you are happy for that to occur, please confirm and I will get my colleague Alon to nuke your account.

Also, just to be clear. You don't need an account here or a Hub account (our SaaS platform to manage cloud servers and remote encrypted backups) to use TurnKey. If you are happy self-hosting, don't plan to run any cloud servers and either the data is unimportant (e.g. just testing or a hobby project) or you have an alternate remote backup regime, then you can simply skip the "Hub API key" step on firstboot.

Having said that, the remote encrypted backups (aka TKLBAM - our built-in custom "smart" data backup and migration tool) may still be of value. Your server doesn't even need to be publicly available (although it must have clear outgoing internet for access to the Hub and uploading your encrypted data to AWS S3 storage).

Anyway I hope things go well for you with TurnKey. If not (or even if so) please do start a new thread.

I'm guessing that you already found it, but you can download the latest ISO from here. As you may have also noticed, the newer (v17.x) release does not provide a pre-built VMDK or OVA, only an ISO. The ISO should install fine, but will require you to create the VM first (then install the ISO to it). We do hope to return to providing VMDKs and OVAs, but I'm not sure when that will be. As a VMware user, perhaps you may be able to assist with testing when we get there? Out of interest, what specific VMware software do you use (please provide name and version if you don't mind)?

As for the API key, that requires a separate user account on our SaaS platform: TurnKey Hub. As "self hoster", you probably won't want/need the Cloud Servers component, but the Backup service (which leverages our built in backup tool; TKLBAM) TurnKey may still be of value?

Although please be aware that whilst we think the Hub adds value (and is our primary source of revenue which keeps the lights on); the Hub is an optional "value add" service. If your data is not important (e.g. just testing) or you have an alternate remote encrypted backup regime, then you can skip the API key step on first boot.

It's perhaps worth being aware that TurnKey also has a SaaS service, called the TurnKey Hub which allows you to easily run TurnKey servers on AWS and/or store encrypted backups on AWS S3 storage. Whilst that is run by us, the Hub user database is separate to the website user DB. So if your existing server (and/or backups) are via the Hub, that's the one you'll need access too. Obviously feel free to use your account here if you need a hand with anything (start a new thread in the support subforum) and/or want to share anymore updates (in the general subforum). But if your team are using the TurnKey, it's best to just change the email address of the existing account and/or add a new GoogleID (or other OpenID type authentication).

Hello there! The name is David Hoyte, though most folks I get to know call me Alex. I am the current acting owner of a roleplaying community that operates on RedM, a multiplayer modification for Red Dead Redemption 2, operating on the CFx.Re platform.

We primarily use the server for hosting the game server, in addition to the Teamspeak server which allows folks to communicate with each other in game using spatial adaptive software (Salty Chat modification).

Within the environment itself, I mostly focus on using Github to coordinate & sync updates through to my developers. Lua is the primary coding language that we use for the server, but also some C+, JS, HTML and CSS are elements that we utilize, plus SQL (Heidi, with MariaDB dictionary)

This is really my second foray into software development & server host management, so it's an exciting time as I learn new skills on the side which I'm applying to my day job (Senior Data Analyst for the State of Indiana).

In terms of community, we mostly focus and coordinate utilizing Discord (https://discord.gg/redrockrp). The community is I would say a "medium" sized community, with about 500 members, and half of them being whitelisted (to keep out the spammers and trolls).

Currently in the process for transitioning ownership from the previous owner to myself. Without knowing the process as it relates to this, I've at least registered for an account, and am waiting for the current account-holder to contact ya'll.

When entering the page via http, it requires you to enter a turnkey-init via SSH, after filling in the password fields, and the API still does not allow you to enter the page. Hi, I have a proxmox server running for quite some time now and just recently installed some turnkey containers to not have all services running on just one main linux installation. So far I have the moinmoin wiki and the fileserver running in a container and everything works really fine, but I was struggling to get my backups written to the correct locations (sshfs :p). So I wanted to try the built-int backup and restore solution. That's why I'm signing up for an account and hope to be approved. Many thanks! cheers, Christian

I've been working with Linux in general since the 90's and have used TurnKeyLinux on internal Proxmox VE servers... and hosted IMAP/SMTP Turnkey servers in AWS in the past.

PCs for People takes corporate equipment donations, refurbishes, and resells to those in need.   Typically in conjunction with government grants.

We also offer post-sales support to customers.   In that vein, I'm planning on setting up a private RustDesk server in AWS, to aid our tech support help desk.

I'll probably start with a simple Turnkey Core on AWS and expand as needed from there.

I think your googling headed you in exactly the right direction. It appears that there was an oversight on our behalf when migrating between versions of MariaDB...

I'll look into developing a fix (which I'll be looking for "real world" testers for once it's ready). In the meantime, the suggestion noted at the top of that thread would be worth a try. I.e. before running the restore, run these commands:

mysql -e "DROP TABLE IF EXISTS 'mysql'.'global_priv';"
mysql -e "DROP VIEW IF EXISTS 'mysql'.'user';"

Then run your restore. Fingers crossed, it should work.

Note that backups from v17.x should restore fine on v17.x. It's just migrating from an older version is problematic.

Also, in case it's not obvious, those commands will drop existing DB components. If you're trying to migrate your data to a new install, then you should be fine, but if restoring to an instance that has any data you want to keep, be sure to run a backup on that first.

Just a quick update that I have packaged the fix and done a new TKLBAM release (for v17.x). To install, please see the GitHub release. I intend to push to the repos, but for now the package can be downloaded and installed as per the instructions noted on the release.

[update} I almost forgot to mention, that I updated the name of the MariaDB/MySQL hook script, from 'maria_db-changes' to 'mariadb-changes'. So please be sure to remove the old one (assuming you update tklbam):

rm -rf /etc/tklbam/hooks.d/maria_db-changes

Please note that the above command will remove it if it exists, but won't fail if it doesn't - so run it if you are unsure and all will be well.

I have created a TKLBAM hook script that should (hopefully) workaround the issue. You can find that (and instructions to "install" it) here: https://github.com/JedMeister/tklbam-restore-mariadb-bugfix (sorry I didn't post that previously - I forget where I had put it).

I have tested it on a users backup (migrating Joomla from v16.x to v17.x) and it worked for me, but they reported that it didn't work for them. Unfortunately I still haven't got specific details of what/how it fails and I can't reproduce it locally. If you could test that with your old backup would be awesome if it's not too much pain? (I.e. try restoring your old backup on a fresh VM with this hook).

I am trying to upgrade a turnkey wordpress v16.1 to v17.1. I setup the v17.1 vm, install security updates, tlkbam-init, and then perform a tklbam-restore. I get an error from MySQL during the restore and it doesn't complete.

I found about Turnkey in the process of creating a 802.11x network for my home on my OpenWRT router which supports FreeRadius... which led to my deciding to run the server on a seperate machine running Debian Bookworm which led to my discovery of a Debian based FreeRadius + Deloradius prebuilt VM application using Turnkey and my investigation of the same led me here.

Anyway... I am a working software engineer trying to transition to more cloud oriented development and depolyments and wanted to learn more about Turnkey in the context of running the aforementioned appliance and, hopefully, more.

Hi Daniel. I'm not 100% sure? Webmin login should use the same credentials as you use when logging in via SSH (assuming that you log in via SSH using password). If you log into SSH using keys and aren't sure of your root password (or you may have forgotten it), you can set one (or reset it if it doesn't seem to be working) like this:

passwd root

If you continue to have issues, please start a new forum thread and note exactly what you've done, what you've tried and what the result is (e.g. specific error messages, etc).

Hi Rick, welcome to TurnKey.

Whilst we used to provide a Tendenci appliance, it hasn't been produced for some time now. Looking at the build code it appears that it hasn't had any updates for ~7 years... So is quite out of date. We should look at getting that back into the library at some point, but until then you'll need to manually install it yourself.

Regardless, TurnKey is based on Debian (which Ubuntu is also based on). According to their System requirements they state that it should be installable on any Linux, Mac OSX or Windows. So TurnKey should be near enough to Ubuntu that it should install and function fine.

What I am hoping for, is to be able to download the TENENCI Membership software, and to gain some insight from other members about installing it on a hosted server (JustHost.com).

I do not have access to the core/root of the server, so I need to have an installation process that takes that into account. I realize that what I am looking may not be possible, as the Tendenci software is designed to operate on the Ubuntu platform. But in my internet search, I read about the TurnKey site, and how you might have such an installation package!

If you'd like to try out the TurnKey Hub, then please sign up over there (the website and the Hub have separate user databases). That will get you an API key.

If you have any Hub specific questions or issues (during setup, while on the free trial or as a paying user), please contact me directly via Hub support (email support AT turnkeylinux.org or use the Hub's "in app chat" button - chat icon towards the bottom right of every page). Normal response time there is within one work day (often quicker).

If you have more general TurnKey questions, issues, etc then please feel free to open a new thread on our forums anytime. I respond to forum posts when I can. Ideally that's at least once per day, but sometimes if I'm busy it can slip a bit, but should usually be at least once per week.

You are absolutely correct. It's a known bug - with a super easy fix:

apt update
apt install -y wireguard-tools

I had hoped to address that long before now, but we're a small team with lots on. Prior to discovering the bug, I had already started on our next major version (v18.x). Whilst it is broken OOTB, considering that it doesn't work at all (as opposed to appearing to work, but having some nasty security bug or similar) and it's an easy fix on your end (as opposed to a complex set of steps) I haven't given it a high priority.

Also FWIW the bug only affects our Proxmox/LXC build. The ISO (downloadable from the Wireguard appliance page) should be fine.

I hope to produce an updated Wireguard ASAP, but no ETA on that. FYI we announce updated appliances via our blog. For info about the latest builds, please check out the release tag.

I've just installed the Wireguard container on Proxmox. I'm going through the client creation flow and after entering any netblock (I want 0.0.0.0/0) to forward over the VPN, I get the following:

Sorry to hear of your troubles with SSL on one of our appliances.

Please open a new support thread (you'll need to log in, I've approved your account) and post details regarding the errors you are hitting. FWIW, SSL should "just work" OOTB. Although the default certs are self signed, so will give web browser errors (noting that a self signed cert is "insecure" - they're not necessarily, but that's for discussion another day...).

Please share the specific appliance you are using (name and version, i.e. post the output of 'turnkey-version'). Also post the exact error message(s) you are seeing and note where you are seeing them (apache log, journal, somewhere else).

Please also share what you have tried and if possible a "step by step" how to recreate the issue(s) you are hitting. If I can recreate the issue on my end, I can almost certainly help you find a fix.

TBH, I'm not sure what you mean when you refer to filecloud? A quick google suggests that it's proprietary "cloud fileserver" software?! From a quick read of their website, I assume that it's possible to install on TurnKey, but it's nothing to do with us and we don't (and won't - because it's not open source) provide an appliance with it pre-installed.

Thank you, nah i havn't worked on updating tkl to odoo 17 yet,  but i did test "UncleDan" odoo 16 build iso and it works.

Needed to get odoo17 version up and going quick on esxi server to continue app development so i used tkl lapp and did a apt-get nightly build install.

Im familiar with tkl-dev so might be able to help.

Hi Santo. First thing, welcome to TurnKey. I've enabled your account and you now should be able to log in. Simple replies are ok here, but if you want to dig into this issue a little more, or want to write up a post to help others, please post a new thread in the forums. Info shared here will likely get lost...

To your issue, in v17.x (and earlier, at least as far back as v15, perhaps earlier) Webmin is bound to localhost and served (using it's built in miniserver) via vanilla http on port 10000. The external access and TLS/SSL termination (i.e. https) is provided by Stunnel (listening on port 12321). That is why it's not working as you expect.

So default setup looks something like this:

internet/network <-https-> yourserver:12321 <-https-> stunnel <-http-> Webmin on localhost:1000

And it sounds like yours has fallen back to:

internet <-http-> Webmin on yourserver:1000

I am unfamiliar with Webmin 2FA, but I suspect that enabling that, reconfigures Webmin to be externally accessible (i.e. no longer bound to localhost) - or perhaps that's just an unintended side effect (of this or something else)? It's also possible, that it's not aware that it's behind a reverse proxy.

Note that stunnel isn't a "proper" reverse proxy (i.e. a "normal" webserver configured as a reverse proxy, or purpose built reverse proxy tools). It's just a tiny TLS/SSL termination server/client. It works well in specific use cases, but it's not particularly flexible.

FWIW there isn't actually a good technical reason why Webmin is still behind stunnel. It's more just legacy config that made things easier for us and so we've continued to use it. In the new v18.x release (which I note doesn't yet include an updated Fileserver appliance), we've updated things and Webmin now serves itself directly/publicly (via it's built in miniserver), so is no longer behind stunnel. So I think you'd find that in v18.x it works as you expect.

So I see 2 options for you:

1. Remove stunnel and serve Webmin directly.

If you want to go this path and continue to use https on port 12321, but without stunnel (like we do in v18.x), you'll need to reconfigure the miniserver (i.e. via /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf) to enable/force https and use port 12321. I don't have the specific Webmin conf handy. but hopefully that's not too hard to work out?! If you have issues, please ask (open a new thread though please). The only other thing you'll need to do is stop stunnel. Assuming v17.x, do that like this:

systemctl disable --now stunnel@webmin.service

Then restart Webmin and it should be all good.

systemctl restart webmin

2. Adjust Webmin config so that it knows it's behind a proxy (stunnel).

I suspect that this should also be a legitimate option, although as I've never used 2FA with Webmin and Stunnel, I can't be 100% sure. It may also be that whilst Webmin is capable, Stunnel is not (i.e. not configurable enough). Regardless, it'd be worth trying if this is what you are after. A quick glance of the Webmin docs suggests that setting 'redirect_port=12321' in /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf and restarting Webmin as per above) might be enough do the trick?

but now I set up 2FA in webmin. Now after submitting the token it redirects me from https to http.

so i thought i force ssl 1 in miniserv.conf. That now wants port 10000 . Port 12321 is already used for webmin by your installation (Maybe you want to explain why you didnt configured within miniserv.conf?) unfortunately i did Not find out where you did configure 12321 as port.

Maybe you want to guide me how to fix that After Submission of Token i dont Fall back to http.

Hi Wolf, thanks for your kind words and show of solidarity.

We do have a raft of anti-spam features integrated into the Hub, but they work with varying degrees of success and are particularly poor at detecting human (or more modern, AI powered) spammers.

Part of the issue is that the software that we use for the site is quite dated (albeit still supported). We had a major issue with the website server a while ago and after a bit of troubleshooting, I decided that the best path forward was to just migrate the site to a new server (the old server had been around for a very long time and had accumulated a fair bit of cruft).

Initially when I migrated the site to a fresh (TurnKey) server, it worked really well. However, it wasn't long before the main anti-spam module that we used to use started playing up (and with the benefit of hindsight, perhaps that was part of the original server issue?).

I got an expert to have a look and after a bit of hunting about and code review, he suggested that we would be better off without that particular module (he said it was poorly coded and hard to debug the issues). With that module disabled, the site worked consistently fine again. As I noted, we have a range of anti-spam measures, and they were mostly sufficient for a while. But we eventually got targeted by a particularly aggressive "smart" bot and/or team of humans. At the point where I gave up and closed the auto account approval, there were 500-1000 spam posts per day!

So whilst this new workflow sucks in many ways, until we redo our website (which has been on the cards for a while and will need to be done soon regardless) it's the best we've got.

Although on the latter, chances are pretty high that unless you actually develop the appliance yourself, it may be a while before we get to it...

I'm always interested to hear feedback from new users, especially those with a bit of experience with Linux. We try to keep the base OS as close to Debian as possible, but with a few extras to make the entry a bit easier for newbs. The theory is that then an experienced Debian user won't find any nasty surprises, but it's also a good entry level OS for those with much less experience. We don't necessarily suggest that TurnKey is the best option in every circumstance, but it should be useful OOTB for someone with minimal requirements, but more of a better starting point for those with more knowledge and a clear idea of their desired outcome. I'm not sure how close to the mark we are, but hopefully we provide a good balance.

I just applied for an account. I manage the SWRebellion community (star wars rebellion) and its entire infrastructure of domains, web servers, cloud services, etc. I've been doing that for 20 years now, we started out with a shared hosting account and now we have a dedicated server and some other things. (privately funded, not a profit organization).

Me, I love to tinker and try new linux operating systems and software. I try just about every free trial I can, and have played with almost ever app on Softaculous. There are some that need their own dedicated or virtual resources to really appreciate, so I am looking to download ready-to-go systems from turnkey. I have used AWS and Azure (pricey). I've tried to use GCP but could never really get things to work there. I've had some luck with Oracle Private Cloud, and they are pretty decent. Mostly i use IONOS for servers but I have used many different webhosts to try out different platforms. 

I really am interested in infrastructure apps, like OpenLDAP, VPN, linux domain controller, and also self-hosting apps like Jitsi, Mattermost, Mqtrix (I am trying them all out :)

Re your Samba issues, my guess is that it is something new as I tested Win11 when I released it and at that point it was working ok (with a backported version of Samba installed from Debian "bullseye-backports"). We do hope to have a refreshed appliance release sometime soon, but in the meantime, it looks like the version of Samba in Debian 12/Bookworm v4.17.12 (FYI Bookworm is the basis of TKL v18.x) has been backported to 11/Bullseye (the basis of v17.x). As backports are already enabled and the relevant packages should be pinned, doing an 'apt upgrade' (or even just an 'apt install samba') should pull in the newer version.

Hopefully that should fix the issue. If not, please open a new thread (you'll need to be logged in) and we can discuss further.

I am using SAMBA AD from Trunkey latest version.

It works ok with windows 10 but not with windows 11.

I can log in as Domain Admin on the PC but not as a simple user. It says "Your account is not allowed to log on this computer".

Windows 11 23H2.

Very strange. Only when I add the Domain User under the local admins Group it can log in.

That's our SaaS service which provides 2 main services, both backed by AWS; "Cloud Servers" (TurnKey servers running on AWS EC2) and "Backups" (encrypted remote backups, uploaded to AWS S3 storage). The 2 services can be used together, or separately (e.g. in your case you probably don't want cloud servers, but backups might be useful?). Re your question/problem of setting a domain, there are a few workarounds. I'll note them here and then expand below:

• use IP address (instead of domain)
• local hosts file entry
• install a DNS server locally
• use a tklapp.com (or other dynamic DNS service) domain
• your own domain

IP Address

This is the quickest and dirtiest approach. Simply set a static IP for the server at initial launch time (i.e. in Proxmox - you're likely already doing that). Then on firstboot, when asked for a domain, give the IP. Note that you will forever need to click through the https security warning in your browser, as you can't get a TLS cert for an IP address.

Note that if you only have Nextcloud available locally, or hosted publicly, that will work fine. But you won't be able to access it via both a local (LAN) IP and a public IP, so you'll need to choose.

hosts entry

You could use domain (real or just a made up dummy domain) and then just add an entry to the hosts file(s) of any PCs you intend to connect to Nextcloud with (i.e. the client PCs). In Linux the hosts file is /etc/hosts and I think that's also where it is on Mac too (although not sure). Windows has a hosts file too, but IIRC it's buried in system32, deep in the Windows dir. You'll need to google for details.

The format of entries is:

# IP_Address    FQDN/hostname
#
# E.g.:
192.168.1.111    nextcloud.test

The above example shows me setting a (dummy) domain of nextcloud.test that points to the IP of 192.168.1.111. Note that if you use an actual domain that you own, you can even get a proper CA signed TLS cert (but I won't go into that right now).

FYI additional domains/hostnames for the same IP can be included afterwards (space separated, on the same line).

install a DNS server locally

dnsmasq is really nice low resource easy to use DHCP and DNS server. It should be installable on any Linux (inc TurnKey). For TurnKey (and other Debian like distros) use apt.

As noted it can do DHCP too, but you likely already have one of those on your network (and more than one will cause you issues), so either don't enable DHCP in dnsmasq (it should only provide DNS by default), or disable the one on your network first (it's likely running on your router). Static DNS entries are added to dnsmasq via hosts file entries as noted above (except the entries go on teh host running dnsmasqq, rather than your local computer).

tklapp.com - or other dynamic DNS service domain

The above options are all serviceable if you only intend to access your Nextcloud server on your LAN. But if you want to access it externally, then you are definitely best off using a proper domain. Then you can easily get a CA signed cert (so no clicking through the security warnings in your browser).

use your own domain

This is probably what you want eventually, your very own domain, for all your hosting needs. If you set it up via a supported provider, you don't even need a static public IP to make it work. That is because many DNS registrars now support updates via API, so you can use a generic dynamic DNS client to update the IP as/when it changes.

Hopefully that's enough to get you started. If you want to discuss more, please start a new thread and I'll respond ASAP.

Hi I just started using proxmox and my first LXC is a turnkey nextcloud but I don't know how to do networking really and I'm already stuck at "enter the domain to serve nextcloud". I probably need to pivot back to learning more and setting up a DNS server before proceeding or something like that, but I'm hoping to get some guidance from the folks at the forum here. I registered for an account for a couple of different reasons, but the primary reason is that I'm looking for an API key for my installation of turnkeylinux-moodle on my brand-new Proxmox node.  I'm not new to virtualization (Xen and VMWare), but I am new to Proxmox and figured that I'd play with that at home.  I have an existing moodle site set up, but I'd like to repurpose that PC, and decided to try Proxmox for that.

So, I'm hoping that I'll be able to get approved in short order.

Thanks for your work! I'm interested in exploring the prebuilts that you have here for Proxmox. For the future I'm interested in setting up automated container creation for users and in expanding ML scripts that rely on user-instantiated databases.

I'm not at all familiar with Caddy, so I can't help with specifics, but the error message suggests that Caddy is trying to connect to the NC server via plain HTTP (rather than HTTPS).

I see 2 options here. One would be to disable the http to https redirect (in our Nextcloud app) and remove the port 443 from your Caddy config. Alternatively (and the preferred method IMO) would be to configure Caddy to explicitly use HTTPS when connecting to the backend Nextcloud server.

Hopefully the first option should be fairly straight forward and should only require config on your Nextcloud server. Basically just remove the rewrite stuff from the Apache nextcloud.conf and restart Apache. If you need more specifics, please ask. Oh also, I assume you'll want to remove the ':443' from your Caddy config

The other (preferred) option will require you to change Caddy config As I'm not familiar with Caddy, I'm not sure exactly how you do that, but if I had to guess, I'd try just adding the schema to the host in your Caddy config. I.e. this:

nc.example.duckdns.org {
        encode gzip
        reverse_proxy https://192.168.0.232:443
}

No idea if that will work though. If not, perhaps ask someone from the Caddy community?

Hello, I'm using nextcloud template in proxmox to run a lxc. All works fine expect for access from outside the lan. For the rest of the containers, I just put the following code in my Caddy configuration file and I can access them from outside but with nextcloud is not working.

Thanks for the access and especially for the time you put into running all of this! I imagine it is like a full time job!

I am lucky enough to have a lot of time to dedicate to my hobbies, one of which is computers in general. I am new to Turnkey and am amazed at everything that is available! I moved to Spain from Peru two years ago (we used to be almost in front of each other, "just" across the Pacific Ocean...) and am lucky enough to still run my business from here, which only takes me between 4 to 8 hours a week, so I have a lot of free time!

Since I have been involved with computer related work for the last 44 years (I am 61 now) and really enjoy it, I am setting up several computer related services here and I think Turnkey could be very useful!

Regarding the scripts I found on https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ , several of them have been very useful in setting up a few things and for Turnkey, the following script has been very useful for setting up several things:

Thanks for sharing info about how you came across us. TBH, I wasn't aware of those scripts. I should have a closer look sometime. FWIW I'm a Proxmox user too, but I just download and launch them via the web UI mostly (because I don't recall the commands OTTOMH - and wasn't previously aware of that collection of scripts).

Sounds like you have a pretty good set up, probably better than mine... :D

I'm in Tasmania, Australia, so we're miles away from each other, nearly on opposite sides of the planet! Cool that we can interact like this despite that.

I am new to Turnkey, I got to install several Turnkey apps by using the scripts in https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/. Since I am relatively new to the HomeLab scene, I am still discovering new things and learning the ins and outs of everything related. I have currently have 2 servers at home, an IBM System X 3200 M3 with 32Gb  RAM, running Proxmox for testing and a Lenovo SystemX 3550 M5 with 256Gb RAM where I run several VMs. I also have a small MiniPC that has an Intel Core i7 1265 with 64Gb RAM that has 6 2.5Gb ports thjat I use to run a pfsense router for my home LAN and am waiting for a new server, a Dell T640 SFF with 32 2.5 Inch SAS/SATA bays and 256GB of RAM that will be used to host a lot of VMs, TrueNAS, and hotsa my personal clud plus a few websites using domains I own.

BTW I currently live in Spain, between Valencia and Alicante next to the Mediterranean Ocean. I am not a spammer and my only interest in this is learning and using Turnkey! I am also a Ham Radio operator and active on iRacing.

Please start a new thread if you need more support/help, but I'll give you a quick bit of info here, now.

Firstly, as a general rule, assuming you are self hosting, I always recommend separate VMs. So long as you don't have limitations that make that difficult, the redundancy is a plus IMO. And you won't have future issues upsetting other software when you are updating/tweaking etc if you only have one app per server.

Beyond ISOs, we also provide LXC builds (primarily intended for ProxmoxVE specifically) so if you have LXC on a server (or better still, run Proxmox), you could use separate TurnKey LXC builds on the same host. If you're not familiar with LXC, then it's a containerization platform, sort of like Docker, but a full OS, rather than just for a specific app. LXC apps share the hosts kernel so have minimal overhead. FWIW LXC pre-dates Docker and initial Docker implementations were based on LXC. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Docker, but I am a massive fan of LXC! :)

Having said that, hosting 2 Docuwikis on the same server is probably not so much of a big deal. So if it works for you, why not? I wouldn't be running other software (such as Bugzilla) on it too though. IMO that's the value of VMs, you can keep stuff isolated and then changes on one, don't cause issues anywhere else.

I have been using Proxmox for only 6 months so I am not an expert. But in my time with it, I have found that running several VMs each dedicated to a specific thing is the way to go as it provides isolation. If one VM fails, you can restore it from backup or recreate it while the rest of your VMs are running independently. You just need to have the CPU cores, disk space and RAM to run it but one of the nice things in Proxmox is that you can assign a certain ammount of resources to each VM but each VM will use only what it needs and the rest will be available for other VMs!

Hello to all, I have to replace an old, outdated, self configured Linux machine running two instances of DokuWiki. The OS is quite old (Ubuntu 16.04. ... yes, I know, that's the reason for this post) and when I try to upgrade the OS some things get broken that causes the also parallel installed Bugzilla or the DokuWiki instances won't work any longer. What I plan to do is run Bugzilla on a separate VM and the DokuWiki an a dedicated VM. Is it possible to run also two instances on one VM or do I have to provide two VMs? Yeah only the DC appliance uses AD/Samba4 style config. All our other apps that include Samba use the legacy/"standalone" style config.

TBH, my Windows days are far behind me, so beyond the basics (and testing our DC appliance before we release a new version) I'm probably not the best person to be giving you advice there. Although having said that, I have read lots about it. FWIW the Samba docs are pretty good IMO. Speaking of which, I reckon that this is the page you'll want.

Hopefully that gets you going in the right direction. Please feel free to post back (please start a new thread) if you continue to struggle. Despite my note above re Samba, I'm pretty handy with Linux, so might have some ideas and/or some vague memories to help you out. Also FWIW, we'll be building a newer DC appliance soon.

My name is Leo and my day job is an ICT Support Officer with the NSW Government mainly supporting Windows, Apple and ChromeOS devices.

I am using Turnkey VMs on my Proxmox host in my homelab where I am successfully using the Domain Controller appliance. I was having a look at seeing if I could get the Media Server appliance to join my Turnkey hosted AD Domain. Samba refused and kept saying the server was set as standalone no matter how I changed the smb.conf file. I even deleted the default (TurnKey) smb.conf after taking a backup and tried net ads join and I get "Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'HOME.WIN' over rpc: The attempted logon is invalid. This is either due to a bad username or authentication information." I'm not sure where to go from here as I have the correct password.

I hear you Greg! That was a bit how my Linux journey started. IIRC my first attempt was about 18 years ago, but it didn't go very well. I had a few other attempts but each time it worked for a while, but there was things that didn't work as they should and at least once I had a serious crash and it stopped working. It's getting pretty good now though I reckon and it has been my daily driver OS for about 10 years now and (mostly) it just keeps getting better IMO. I don't even have a local Windows machine these days. I do have a VM that I use for testing, but that's it.

Hello.  So as previously stated I'm just a nerd that like to tinker around with things.  Started messing with linux over 20 years ago but it was a sloooooooow start.  I'd try for a while, give up, try again, get a little further, give up and so on and so on.  Finally a friend of mine gave me the perspective on it that gave me the momentum to actually have it running all the time.  It's not my daily driver but I do have Ubuntu Studio loaded on a desktop and I have a server vm running some app installs and some docker containers.  Long story longer... I'm always trying new stuff and this looks like something fun to play with.  Happy New Year from Las Vegas!!!

I stumbled upon your site and services while trying to build a network management stack comprised of containers running on Proxmox. I have only been experimenting with Turnkey Linux for a week or two but love the Observium container, the Pihole container and the Jellyfin server container. I have been using the LAMP appliance on my home server for awhile now. I would like to upgrade to the newest version so I created a new LXC on proxmox and mentally created a list of everything to transfer. After doing a bit of reading, I thought I would try the easy way using your backup and restore tools rather than do it all manually.

Hello, I recently used Turnkey to upgrade our wiki system stack.  Now I am working on updating our Redmine system (stack from those "B" guys).  I am running into a privileges issue on the database migration.

Based on the database users in Turnkey Redmine(mariadb.sys,mysql,redmine,root), I believe the correct user to grant database permissions is redmine.

General procedure:

MariaDB>drop database redmine_production;
MariaDB>create database redmine_production;
MariaDB>grant all privileges on redmine_production.* to 'redmine'@'localhost' identified by 'password';
>mysql -u root -p redmine_production < backup.sql

I have also tried 'authentication_string' instead of 'password' as it appears the database schema uses this field.  But in either case, when I try to migrate the database (bundle exec rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=production), I get access denied for user 'redmine'@'localhost'

rake aborted! 
ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished: Access denied for user 'redmine'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

Obviously you can ask Hub questions here on the forums too and I try to respond to all forum posts regularly, but Hub support will almost always get a quicker response (expected response time is within one work day, often much quicker).

I just signed up for a Turnkey account after installing a Turnkey template on my Proxmox server. I'm fairly new to the world of Proxmox and when I saw all of the templates from here, I decided to sign up for an account. So far with Proxmox, I created my own LXC with Ubuntu 24.10 and installed pihole onto it to be a secondary instance on my network in case my primary (hosted on an unRAID server) is down for whatever reason. I didn't see a turnkey pihole template... maybe something to create in the future?

I'm happy to be here and am looking forward to exploring more.

We have many users running TurnKey in production, but TBH I have never heard of "HPS" before, so you've raised my curiosity. I had a bit of a google and couldn't find anything conclusive (there seem to be a few different clustering technologies and companies using the "HPS" acronym). Regardless, I'd be interested to hear more about what you're up to.

Whilst it seems likely that I haven't come across the specific tech you're working with (unless under a different name?) I'd be more than happy to assist and I'm confident that with your specific knowledge and my general knowledge, we could get something working to your requirements.

While I have you though, re Nextcloud/ownCloud, I recommend using Nextcloud, not ownCloud. I'm sure ownCloud is serviceable, but Nextcloud is developed by the original core ownCloud devs (the ownCloud company made some choices that upset them, so they did a mutiny and forked ownCloud and Nextcloud was born). Nextcloud is much more featureful, with vastly more plugins/addons and there is a lot more development going on there. So most users generally prefer it.

Please note that it requires an AWS account (because your encrypted backups are stored remotely within AWS S3 storage). I'm setting up a Debian 12 server for a small development and testing lab.
These are its features: AMD Dual Core, 16 GB RAM, 120 SSD, 4GB HDD in RAID.

I would like to understand how resources are used by installing multiple apps.
Referring to the VMs I use on my PC, 3 VMs with 3GB of memory each occupy 9GB on the PC even when the individual VMs do not use all the memory.

So,

• how do TKL use CPU and RAM resources?
• How should I partition disks?
• How do I install TKL and individual apps?
• Is Docker used? Do I have to or can I install it separately for those apps not included in TKL?
• I don't see Guacamole, isn't that expected?

I very much appreciate your help. Turns out it was the virtual box bridged via mac wifi that was causing the outbound communication issue. I switched the mac over to wired nic and walaa, I can ping the outside world through the command line in my appliance. 

I can't tell you how crazy this was making me. I am grateful.

Sorry to hear of your issues and it certainly sounds like you've addressed all the things that might usually cause this sort of issue.

It's been years since I've used VirtualBox and I have zero experience with Mac, but I do know that if your Mac uses wireless to connect, that under the hood, VirtualBox needs to do some funky stuff to get it to work (whilst VirtualBox has a "bridged" option, wireless hardware doesn't actually support proper bridging - like a normal NIC does - so in that scenario VirtualBox implements pseudo bridging).

TBH, the technical details are a bit over my head, but I do know that in the scenario you've got set up (if using wifi from your Mac to your router), some routers will just silently drop packets from a VM "bridged" via wifi. If you aren't using wifi then clearly that's not the issue. If you are and have the option of using a wire to connect your Mac to your router, give that a go and see if that changes anything.

Still, if I understand correctly, it's getting a DHCP lease from whatever manages your DHCP (is that what 1.1.1.1 is? Probably your router?) which certainly makes it seem pretty weird that it can't connect?! If you haven't already, I recommend double checking that it can ping your gateway (probably your router).

I also recall years ago that I had issues with "bridged" mode in VirtualBox for no apparent reason. Out of desperation, I just swapped it to NAT and set up rules to allow access to the specific ports that I wanted access to. It's not ideal, but might be worth a try? Actually as you say incoming traffic is working ok, just not outgoing traffic, perhaps it's worth just adding an additional virtual NIC (in VIrtualBox - you'll probably want to do that with it stopped), set the new vNIC to NAT and see if your VM can get outgoing internet via that?

Let me know how you go with that and if you continue to have issues, I'll have a bit more of a think and give you some more things to try.

I am somewhat new to Turnkey Linux, I have used various Debian based Linux OS's for years and am somewhat of a hobbiest in that regard.

The reason I would like to join the forum is the difficulty i am experiencing in using a ZoneMinder TKL Appliance on a Mac in Virtualbox. I have it working to the point of my home cameras being seen and recorded, plus I can access the webmin, zoneminder console, webshell command lines via a web browser no problem.

Where my issue is, is the NTP service cannot get to the internet, and for some reason the hardware time does not reflect the host mac's time. Nor can I ping or any other command from the appliance outbound. I have checked and rechecked my lans firewall, turned off the Mac firewall, have the appliance in bridge mode in Virtualbox, plus using DHCP with DNS set at 1.1.1.1 address is picked up but but no luck reaching DNS. I have checked the ntp.conf, also the resolve.conf list both 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 under name servers but to no avail.

Finally, according to the webmin settings the appliance firewall is off at boot.

I have to admit I am at a loss with the DNS issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for any confusion &/or concern Brian, I misspoke!

I meant email address. I.e. "I discovered a similar email (with a different mail service)".

For full transparency - if/when need be, I can manually reset passwords On the few occasions where I have done that, it has always been at the explicit request of a user who has reported problems logging in (to test that login is working - at least from my end). And I ALWAYS recommend that the user change the password ASAP.

The other things that I can do:

• change the author of posts - which IIRC I've only done in this thread. (To change a guest post to an enabled user - so the post can be edited if desired).
• delete users and/or posts - which I've only ever done with spammers (hence this thread existing).

The only password I can see is via manually checking in the database, but it's not your raw password, just the salted and hash of it - which because of random salting and secure hashes, is of no real value to anyone.

I have updated the post above, using strike-through on the mistaken use of "password" - so your post and this response still make sense.

Also re not supporting cache, can you please describe the issue in more detail? There are a multitude of different ways to cache stuff in WordPress, so I'm not sure what cache you are wanting or trying to enable?

I'm Nikita. I started to use Turnkey Linux LAMP because i want to study front-end. I think there is no other cause. I found out about Turnkey from my friend who is full stack developer, so he said that the most easy way how u can make a webserver is from this application 

Do you mean a website password? If so, then I suggest just setting new one: /user/password.

If you mean something/somewhere else, please give some more info.

Also (i forget to mention this in the first comment) i have troubles to make a password on sign up, i just really dont see a space where i needed to enter the password, if there is no big trouble i need ur help

ITs was uncommented indeed, and the conf change was effective bc netstat unlisted port 22 and marked 12333 as a listening TCP port.

Right now i managed to find a work around so i can leave it at port 22. Thnx for the help.

I assume that you uncommented the Port line too? (I.e. removed the '#' from the start of the line)?

If not then my guess is that's the problem.

If you did, then where is this server running? Perhaps there is some other firewall/security group/etc that is blocking traffic and also needs to be opened?

I'd like to change the SSHD port for a mysql turnkey server hosted on amazon. After my changes however, i was unable to connect to the server on the new AND the old (22) port as the connection timed out.
Changes made:

• /etc/ssh/sshd_config changed to port 12333
• restarted sshd
• in webmin adapted the firewall to accept this port (i exptended an existing rule)
• applied configuration

---
netstat reported the port as listening for tcp and the sshd service reported success as well but an attenpted ssh connection timed out on the new port
Added another accept rule via  iptables  and rebooted.
Still nothing can connect :(

We also have a SaaS product/service called the TurnKey Hub. That offers 2 services; our built in remote, encrypted, backup service (TKLBAM) and TurnKey cloud servers (hosted on AWS EC2). While they compliment each other, they can be used separately. E.g. if you are running local server/s and want to use the backup service with it/them.

If you want to use TKLBAM then you'll need to sign up to the Hub and get a Hub API key

Looking to using the turnkey items, while learning more in the environment. 

To use TKLBAM (out built in backup and migration tool), check out the page in that link - i.e.: "/tklbam". Actually to short circuit that, you can sign up to the Hub. Although I'd still recommend checking out the TKLBAM doc page (first link above).

Before you start though, please be aware that under the hood, TurnKey is Debian, so another option is doing a Debian style "in place upgrade". Be sure to have a local backup first. Even if you use TKLBAM, I recommend taking a local Proxmox "snapshot" as well (that will be quicker to restore if something goes wrong.

We're still working through the latest (v18.0 - Debian 12/Bookworm based) upgrades and haven't released the updated Fileserver appliance yet. But if you go the Debian style upgrade route, then you could (probably) go all the way to a 12/Bookworm base.

A third - but almost certainly a bit more painful route is to manually transfer the data yourself to the newer v17.x release. For the fileserver, you'll need to transfer the files (from your fileserver - ensuring that the permissions remain the same), the Linux users, the Samba users (that map to the Linux users) and the Samba config file (although perhaps that's where the Samba users are stored? I forget now sorry).

Either way, we offer free "best effort" support via our forums. Please feel free to open a new thread in our forums if you hit any issues, have any questions and/or want any further assistance.

If you do sign up the Hub, please hit me up via the "in app" support (little blue icon in the bottom right). I will almost certainly respond quicker there (within one work day) if you have Hub specific questions and will provide free "getting started" type support. The TurnKey Hub is our SaaS platform where you can launch Cloud Servers and/or manage encrypted, remote backups. The Hub sign up is separate to the website.

Backups will work anywhere so long as your local Hub instance has outgoing internet access, so if you have no interest in cloud servers, you can still use the backups feature. The Hub API key links our built in open source backup tool; TKLBAM (TurnKey Backup And Migration) to your server/s. The Hub also provides "basic" support for paying customers and/or you can access paid support there too - or via support AT turnkeylinx.org.

Please note that the Hub is a non-compulsory, "value add" service - that funds our activities and helps us keep the lights on. There is no obligation to use the Hub and Webmin and your server will not be limited or crippled in any way. You can use the left hand menu to access Webmin features/tools or the "Dashboard" via the tab at the top.

If you do choose to get an API key (and have skipped the Hub API key step at firstboot), then either enter it on the Webmin TKLBAM page or run tklbam-init.

Funny enough I see others in here using Proxmox.

This is the reason I am here as I wanted to give MediaWiki a try, installed as a TurnKey container.

Booting it up it shows: Mediawiki, TurnKey GNU/Linux 18.0 (Debian 12/Bookworm).

Accessing it via a browser on the webmin interface (port 12321) it is asking me to link to my TurnKey Hub Account.

TBH, I'm not a TurnKey Domain Controller user, although I have been responsible for updating it of few years now (and test it against a local Win10/11 VM). The current appliance is getting a bit dated now, but I hope to update it soon. The current appliance is based on Debian 11/Bullseye and includes Samba v4.17.3 - installed from bullseye-backports. However it can be upgraded to Samba v4.17.12 like this:

apt update && apt install samba

Or upgrade to all packages via an upgrade:

apt update && apt upgrade

The upcoming release (v18.0 - no ETA currently) will be based on the newer Debian 12/Bookworm and unless there is a strict requirement to include a newer version, will include the same above noted version (v4.17.12). A newer Samba version is available from bookworm-backports (currently Samba v4.19.5). If we include the older one but you want/need the newer, then I'd be more than happy to assist you to update it.

Regarding configuring Samba, our default config should be quite usable for relatively simple AD requirements. For more complicated config, then I suggest browsing the Samba docs.

If you want/need more detailed support as I noted above, I'm no expert, but if yuo open a new thread, I'm happy to provide "best effort" assistance.

I am a meat popsicle. This is my second attempt to get into the community. Last time nothing, this time hopefully I'll have better luck.

I am rebuilding my home lab and finally turning off my SBS Server 2003 (it reached its majority this year - 21) and am looking at several options, one of which is Turnkey Linux.

I'm just completing the hardware setup on my new (as in never used) hp ml10 v2 server, Yes, I know it is old, but I've only just had the money and the luck to gather the parts needed to complete the build. All that remains is a PCIE 2x M.2 NVME board and two WD Black NVME 2280 1TB SSDs for the OS (ProxMox). The server has had a CPU upgrade to the 4 core, 8 thread CPU and 32Gb of RAM to fill it out.

I have an additional storage pool of four used WD 2.0TB Enterprise drives (from a lot of 6 I bought for A$130) that will provide ZFS raid storage on top of that.

Eventually, I'll follow along with Hardware Haven and Serve the Home and go to a Proxmoxx cluster. For right now all I want to do is learn about proxmox and my AD options and see if Turnkey  Linux will work to replace my aged AD infrastructure.

Re getting a Hub key: You'll need to sign up for our SaaS product/service called the TurnKey Hub. That offers 2 services; our built in remote, encrypted, backup service (TKLBAM) and TurnKey cloud servers (hosted on AWS EC2). While they compliment each other, they can be used separately. E.g. seeing as you are self hosting probably only the backup service will be relevant. Assuming you don't want to test out Hub servers, then you may as well cancel that ASAP (sign up gives you a free 14 day trial).

Speaking of which, I have cross posted your report re possible spamming/malware coming from a TurnKey instance - as a forum thread. TBH I'm not a 100% sure, but I'll reply properly over there ASAP.

Finally (for now) if you are interested in having a look at the TurnKey Hub and/or getting an API key, please see a post I just wrote above. If that's not relevant, please free free to just respond and/or start a new thread if you have more questions/issues.

A while ago I installed Leantime on Proxmox using TKL's template. It worked fine.

I also run a mailserver (mailcow) at home and recently got listed again on Spamhaus' exploit and css blocklist.

The info I got from Spamhaus' website it the following:

Why was this IP listed?
[my-public-ip] has been classified as part of a proxy network. There is a type of malware using this IP that installs a proxy that can be used for nearly anything, including sending spam or stealing customer data. This should be of more concern than a Spamhaus listing, which is a symptom and not the problem.

The proxy is installed on a device - usually an Android mobile, firestick, smart doorbell, etc, but also iPads, and Windows computers - that is using your IP to send spam DIRECTLY to the internet via port 25: This is very often the result of third party "free" apps like VPNs, channel unlockers, streaming, etc being installed on someone's personal device, usually a phone.

Technical information
Important: If this IP operates as a mail server, it should look and behave like a mail server. The HELO currently used appears to be dynamic and that is behaviour commonly observed in malware/proxy networks.

Recent connections:

(IP, UTC timestamp, HELO value)

Important points:

The HELOs are often dynamic-looking rDNS and usually claim to be from geographically very different networks OR spoofs of major brands.
They can include impossible HELOs like "gmail.com", "outlook.com", "comcast.net" - Gmail, Outlook and Comcast do not use these. These are all fake.
If the HELO does not make sense for the IP generating it, it should be looked at closely.
There is often more than one compromised device.
Guest networks should also be secured.

Any devices with "free" VPNs, TV streaming, channel unlocking, or 3rd-party apps installed are the first things to check.

What should be done about it?
We very strongly recommend securing your firewall to not allow any packets outbound on port 25, except those coming from any email server(s) on your local network. Remote sending of email to servers on the Internet should still work if web-based, or configured properly to use port 587 using SMTP-AUTH. Guest networks should be secured too.

After port 25 is outbound is secured, the proxy needs to be found and removed. We can only see what's coming from the NAT (public) IP; anything inside your network is visible only to you. You can start logging at the router or firewall to see what's trying to use port 25 and that should lead you right to the compromised device(s).

When I saw this report, I closed port 25 (which at the time pointed to mailcow) and killed the leantime container as the only device on my network with the HELO/hostname leantime, was the leantime container.

I checked my mailcow logs and they are clean as far as I could find with the help of the mailcow community.

I disconnected the network of the container and started examining it, but email sending was never set up either for TKL or leantime itself.

Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem/coulprit?

I'am now learning myself the proxmox VM software and trying many different ways of creating servers for plex, owncloud and al my different games and all my crazy idees of linking my data storage to all my node's, pc's and vm's. 

In the proxmox ct template list there are alot of your ct's so i tought lets give some off them a try.

My home lab is comprised of 1 truenas baremetal, 4 proxnodes(3old dell optiplex,1old lenovo sff) and 3 multipuspose pc's.

My running but never used Mobile server box that i am building for possible future lan's consists of 4 old dell server proxnodes with 1 controle pc.

It's been requested a number of times and we're certainly not opposed to it, but we're a small team and have a lot going on. If you're keen to have a go at creating one, then we provide our build tool chain and I'd be happy to give you a bit of coaching.

turnkeylinux flow seems optimized to launch on AWS

Yes and no - let me explain. We do have an optimized build for AWS and a remote encrypted backup tool/service. We encourage it's use for both Cloud (AWS servers and backups), as well as local servers (backup and data migration only). We encourage the tools that leverage AWS as a matter of survival and sustainability. It's the only revenue source we have and it helps keep the lights on and pay our few committed open source contractors. They do the lions share of maintenance and development work - at well below market rates. We have always had intentions of supporting other cloud providers, but we have limited resources and a million and one things to do. So it's always a matter of deciding on priorities. Everything we say yes to is saying no to everything else, at least for now.

Beyond the AWS builds, we also provide both ISOs and LXC/Proxmox builds. These are both free (as in beer and freedom). They are intended to be downloaded and used locally and whilst we do encourage the use of our services, there is no obligation. We have previously done VM specific builds but the maintenance overhead was a bit too much for us to sustain and the ISOs install fine to most VMs (e.g. VMware, VirtualBox, KVM, etc).

FWIW TurnKey is based on Debian. While it's a little different to Red Hat based distros, the stability is better than Fedora for servers. To be clear, I mean stable in the sense that "things change less and releases are further apart and supported for longer". I don't mean stability in the sense of "fewer bugs and/or functional end user stability". I can't comment on Fedora explicitly as I've never used it, although when I first started playing with Linux, I used a RHEL based distro, then Ubuntu and finally Debian (because it's less buggy than Ubuntu in my experience).

Debian "stable" releases are about 2 years apart as a general rule and are supported with security updates for 5 years from release. We track Debian stable, but due to resources are often a bit slow updating all our appliances. We're hoping to improve that in future, but that remains to be seen.

Many prefer a more "up to date" distro (such as Fedora), especially for desktop use, but personally I use vanilla Debian on my desktop/laptops too, and TurnKey on my servers. IMO more stable is better for getting work done when nothing changes and things almost never break. Rarely ever needing to worrying about updates is preferable IMO. But your use case may be different.

I'd be willing to write up some of my experiences as guides to new users if there's room for this, I think there is as I went looking for a guide to getting started with turnkey wordpress, and didn't find one so I'm still "setting up" my wordpress installation.

Im using turnkey wordpress and trying to configure my website to get it working with ddns . my IP address changes infrequently so Im getting there...

Im trying to build myself a workflow that is much less dependent on Big Tech, starting with email and web, and I'll probably be adding mastodon or something like this .. (I notice I didn't find a turnkey mastodon server) .  at the moment Im running everything on my own hardware at home.  turnkeylinux flow seems optimized to launch on AWS .

• I'm an engineer, (nearly) retired, so one of my VM usecases would be for a lightweight workstation VM  with vscodium, browsers and python . what im using for this for the moment isn't turnkey , rather fedora workstation 39 with the xfde spin ... but I'd be open to other suggestions.

IIRC Manjaro is Arch based right? My son uses Arch on his desktop and one of our developers uses Gentoo! I've used a rolling distro before but found myself spending way to much time doing updates, so personally I find Debian stable less hassle. So I use Debian for both servers and Desktop.

Actually im Interested to get the Account Activated so i can use the TKLBAM-Feature to Backup the settings. I hope i can use a Local Backup-Target with it. And maybe i use AWS for it(really unsure).

New home lab user, getting into Linux as a hobby

FYI we just published updated versions of both Gameserver (v18.0) and Leantime (v18.1) yesterday. The Gameserver update is a major OS version update and the game scripts. The Leantime release is just an update of Leantime itself and the most up to OS date packages (that you could install yourself with 'apt update && apt upgrade'). FYI I haven't yet updated the website (for ISO downloads) but the PVE Templates section (in the web UI) should already show them. If not, then you can manually force the list to update. I'm note sure how to do that via the Proxmox web UI, but IIRC from the CLI this should do it:

pveam update

Re image gallery, we do have a "Gallery" appliance, although the software is quite old. It has been updated to run in modern PHP, but not the look of it. It looks a bit old school.... Please try it out though and see what you think.

I have been running some containers on my Pi for a while already. Now I just bought a ThinClient for my home lab and installed Proxmox on it to try out if I like it better than manually taking care of all the low-level sysadmin stuff. In Proxmox I saw the turnkey templates and it made my curious. I am still waiting for a bigger disk (only have 16Gb which is really limiting), but as soon as I have one I want to try and migrate my Nextcloud and maybe some image galleries for family as well - have not yet checked if turnkey offers immich

To get an API key and try the remote encrypted backups, you'll need to sign up to the TurnKey Hub (the user databases are separate). If you have any problems or questions specifically to the Hub, please hit me up via Hub support (blue icon in the bottom left). You could post in the forums too/instead if you want, but you'll get a quicker response via support (I prioritize that).

New homelab experimenter starting to learn about LXCs and networking.  Already playing with Turnkey wireguard and a couple of other things and would like to be able to get the API key for back-up and access the forums etc.  Appreciate you are busy and there is no rush.

Sounds like there's something not quite right with our NodeJS app then! As you note, it's actually stated on the NodeJS page that the command you used should work as you expected - but obviously doesn't!

TBH I'm not sure what has happened there as the guide that is on the appliance page is clearly not how it's set up!?

I'll have to have to look into what happened there and fix it so it does work as expected - it certainly should do what it says on the tin!

I've put an issue on our issue tracker so it doesn't get forgotten.

In the meantime as a workaround, you could try the below. It's essentially what is in that guide that is linked, but with some tweaks:/p>

Support for installing npm packages globally more securely without root or sudo:

su node
npm install -g package

The documentation for the node.js appliance states npm packages can be globally installed without root/sudo, however when trying to execute the above command as the 'node' user, I get 'EACCES: permission denied'. The '/usr/local/lib/node_modules' directory appears to be owned by root. How therefore should I execute 'npm install -g ...' other than as the root user, which seems to go against the purpose of using '-g' ?

It does sound like your issue is not quire the same, but I suspect that it may be related. Adding your experiences over there would still be of value regardless and may assist us to narrow it down and work out what is going on. So please feel free to add your voice over there. Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce the issue others have reported, but it sounds like your issue is slightly different. Hopefully we can work out what is going on soon...

I have a home server and am experimenting with turnkey linux to deploy gitlab+ gitlab runner to facilitate the creation & configuration of virtual machines using proxmox.

My primary intent is to join this forum and reach out with specific questions related to the gitlab turnkey linux implementation; and to get guidnace on some of the problems I am encountering.

Like others I am running a proxmox machine and have found Turnkey to be very useful. I am encountering some issues with gitlab runner configuration (500 error at /admin/runners page in gui) and would like to share my issues

Luego aprendí a diseñar app, aplicaciones para teléfono celular, durante un año diseñé 140 plantillas, para que al final comprendiera que el sistema que utilizaba no soportaba la carga de usar videoconferencia en vivo, streaming, por tanto este año emigré a wordpress (sistema que ya utilizo hace años) pero ahora con la intención de traducir esos 140 diseños a tres páginas web, para desarrollar tres proyectos originales míos. 

He recorrido un largo camino para llegar con ustedes. Busco poder trabajar en libertad, con WordPress, pero sin tener conexión a hosting, ni obligado a pagar cuotas a nadie, sino que pueda yo desarrollar mis diseños de forma libre e independiente, para luego al final subirlos a la web.

In recent years I have designed two board games that are printed in five languages: English, Spanish , French, Italian and Portuguese,... I tried for a year to sell them on Marketplace by sending messages to Europe, Canada, the United States, and well. ..

Then I learned to design apps, cell phone applications, for a year I designed 140 templates, so that in the end I understood that the system I was using did not support the burden of using live video conferencing, streaming, so this year I migrated to wordpress ( system that I have been using for years) but now with the intention of translating those 140 designs into three web pages, to develop three of my original projects.

I have come a long way to reach you. I am looking to be able to work freely, with WordPress, but without having a connection to hosting, nor forced to pay fees to anyone, but rather I can develop my designs freely and independently, and then ultimately upload them to the web.

I hope this system authorizes me soon, because I have been looking for programs for a week that will help me download WP without so much problem.
