WordPress Network/Multisite Permission Issue

anthonysexton's picture

I am trying to upload plugins/themes via the WordPress admin interface on a Multisite install.

I have checked the blogs.dir directory and it's permissions are 755 as required.

The error I am getting is:

Unable to create directory /var/www/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2/files/2012/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

If I login via SFTP, I cannot see anything under the /blogs.dir/ folder yet. Given i've added no content yet, that would seem ok however i'm not sure.

The folder is owned by me (root) however the other folders are owned by www-data. Could that be the issue?

Ok- I've worked it out (I did

Ok- I've worked it out (I did spend an hour before posting this, I promise).

The issue was the ownership of the blogs.dir folder. I connected via SSH and ran the following command:

chown -R www-data: /var/www

All sorted!
