Matomo (formerly Piwik) is the leading free software alternative to Google Analytics, used on more than 320,000 websites. Matomo lets you easily collect and visualize data from websites, apps & the Internet of Things. It can generate detailed reports of your website visitors, the search engines and keywords they used, the language they speak, your popular pages, and much more. Privacy is built-in.

This appliance includes all the standard features in TurnKey Core, and on top of that:

  • Matomo configurations:

    • Matomo is installed from Debian's signed Trixie package repository to /usr/share/matomo.

    • Geographic reports use the upstream GeoIP2 PHP API and the automatically refreshed DB-IP Lite database.

      Security note: Updates to Matomo may require supervision so they ARE NOT configured to install automatically. See below for updating Matomo.

  • SSL support out of the box.

  • Adminer administration frontend for MySQL (listening on port 12322 - uses SSL).

  • Postfix MTA (bound to localhost) to allow sending of email (e.g., password recovery).

  • Webmin modules for configuring Apache2, PHP, MySQL and Postfix.

Supervised Manual Matomo Update

Back up Matomo and its database, then refresh the signed package metadata and install the current Trixie package:

apt-get update
apt-get install matomo

The optional GeoIP2 PHP API is maintained through Composer. Review its release notes, then update it and its locked dependencies with:

COMPOSER_ALLOW_SUPERUSER=1 composer update \
    --working-dir=/usr/local/share/matomo-geoip2 \
    geoip2/geoip2 --with-all-dependencies

We recommend subscribing to the Matomo changelog to be notified about new versions and security updates.

Credentials (passwords set at first boot)

  • Webmin, SSH, MySQL: username root

  • Adminer: username adminer

  • Matomo: username admin

Usage details & Logging in for Administration

No default passwords: For security reasons there are no default passwords. All passwords are set at system initialization time.

Ignore SSL browser warning: browsers don't like self-signed SSL certificates, but this is the only kind that can be generated automatically without paying a commercial Certificate Authority.

Username for Matomo:

Login as username admin

Web - point your browser at either:

  1. http://12.34.56.789/ - not encrypted so no browser warning
  2. https://12.34.56.789/ - encrypted with self-signed SSL certificate

Username for database administration:

Login as MySQL username root at

  1. https://12.34.56.789:12322/ - Adminer database management web app
  2. MySQL command line tool:
    $ mysql --user root --password

Username for OS system administration:

Login as root except on AWS marketplace which uses username admin.
