I came across Turnkey about a week ago, and love what it gives me as an administrator.

For some time now I have been toying with the idea of selling a low-cost physical/virtual appliance based on Ubuntu + a specific app I am a big fan of, but after playing around with Turnkey, I am wondering about basing it on Turnkey instead of 'real' Ubuntu but don't want to tread on any toes if it's not allowed/frowned upon.

Can anyone shed any light?

You can't buy groceries or pay the bills with smiles and sunshine (or ideology). In my mind, free software is not primarily about price, it's about freedom. Freedom to make a living doing something you love is something that free software can enable, so long as you make sure to abide by the terms of the open source licenses.

If you want to be a good citizen and give back there are many ways to get involved. From donating a portion of the proceeds back to the project to developing new open source appliances, writing community documentation, answering questions on the forums, etc.
