I want to develop a Virtual Appliance which is composed of components running on multiple hosts.  For example, I want to separate the Mysql from my Apache Server running Wordpress.  Or more complicated multi-tier applications.

To achieve this, there needs to be a central definition of the configuration with address ranges (vlans), and list of host names with a role for each host.  When the appliance build / boot process starts, it is told it's hostname and from that it works out it's role and thus it's configuration..

Does this sound like something anyone else wants?  Or is this not the domain of TKL?

Definitely interesting. Liraz and I have spoken about what you're talking about, but in the sense of deploying (and managing) TurnKey clusters. Currently it's just an idea that needs a lot more thought, research and design.

We'd love to hear your thoughts, and if you want to take on the beast, and scratch your own itch, go for it.
