Hi,
I'm out of my element with MySQL
I have read that the following "Settings include query_cache_size and innodb_buffer_pool_size. Ideally, you'll want to reserve half of your servers memory for the database (or more)."
In /etc/mysql/my.cnf
I don't find these settings. Should they simply be added? Might they be configured somewhere else?
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

TBH I don't know...
But google is your friend! :)
These results looked interesting and relevant:
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/mysqlperformance.htm http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/enable-the-query-cache-in-mysql-to-improve... http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-optimize-mysql-response-time/ http://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/MySQL_Performance_Tuning
Although I certainly can't vouch for any of them, but at a glance they seem to provide some useful info...
Hope that helps get you going... Good luck! :)
Also it'd be great if you documented your discoveries. The community docs (i.e. wiki) might be a good place to do that?
