Referrals for Contract Work for TurnKey users

If you haven't already, please read the blog post which outlines what we are striving to achieve.

TL;DR - our aim is to collect a list of Freelancers and companies who can be hired by TurnKey GNU/Linux users. The work will include consultancy, support, training and/or customization. We will refer interested users to the most appropriate freelancer. After referral, it will be a direct relationship between the consultant and the TurnKey user.

As you should already be aware, TurnKey GNU/Linux is a server-centric headless minified Debian GNU/Linux derivative. Depending on the appliance, additional software is pre-installed and pre-configured to fulfil a specific role. If you think that you have the skills to help out TurnKey users as a "TurnKey Consultant For Hire" then please read on.

Skill and Knowledge Requirements

Ideally all consultants should have basic GNU/Linux commandline knowledge. Confidence using generic tools such as ssh, sftp, git, etc would generally be expected although may not be mandatory, depending on your field of specialization. Explicit experience with at least one TurnKey appliance is highly desirable.

To be eligible, you must meet at least one of the following:

  • Generalist expert with Debian headless servers; or
  • Expert in two or more of the common, pivotal Debian components. E.g. Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP, Python, etc; or
  • Expert in one of the web apps or frameworks found in an appliance. E.g. Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, etc.

    Commitment to Free Software

A fundamental requirement is a dedication to free software. Ideally you are already contributing to one of our upstream software components, or even TurnKey directly. If you are contributing to free software in some way, please detail that in the relevant section of the form below.

As a minimum, we require a commitment that if you discover a bug within a TurnKey appliance that you report it on our issue tracker. If you have a workaround (or better still a patch), please share that too. If it is an upstream bug (e.g. a bug in Debian packaged software or upstream software) please also post a bug in the relevant location (e.g. Debian/upstream bugtracker directly) and include the link to the upstream report in the report on our tracker.

    Other Requirements

We are currently in the "information gathering" stage. That means that we need to gather as much information about the process as we can. We will initially gather some info from the prospective client prior to making the referral. However, deeper understanding of the user's needs, any pain points for you and direct feedback on the whole process will be invaluable.

If we build on this concept, we will eventually require a share of your TurnKey Linux related revenues (or contributions of TurnKey development work in kind). We will clarify any updated requirements when the time comes. Obviously any contributions you are willing to make before then will be warmly welcomed.

    TurnKey Solutions for TurnKey Users

Whenever possible we want TurnKey users to remain TurnKey users. So unless there is a strong reason to use something else, please provide users that are referred to you with TurnKey solutions. After all, it is Debian under the hood so it can generally be adapted to any purpose which Debian fulfils.

If you think that there is a better tool than TurnKey to achieve a user's ends, then please drop me a line so we can chat about it. If you have ideas on how you think that TurnKey can better fulfil user's needs and/or make things better for you, please let us know!
