- When it comes to palliative care most people freak out!
What is Palliative care? It is specialised medical care for people who have been diagnosed with a serious illness. This type of medical care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of illness.
Palliative care is a very special part of the healthcare service delivered by a multi-disciplinary team of dedicated health professionals. However, there is often a misunderstanding that when people are referred to palliative care, they are on the last days of life. While end-of-life care is important, palliative care does not mean that you are about to die. The earlier palliative care is introduced to patients with a terminal, life-limiting illness, the better the quality of life outcomes for patients.
Palliative care does not mean always mean terminal care!
This care is, in fact, a medical luxury and very few people have access to it. It makes the end of life more meaningful; it adds to both the quality and quantity of life. The goal is to improve the quality of life of patients and their families by identifying and treating the patient in all aspects of their life- physically, psychologically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Palliative care is a holistic approach to health service, that aims to give patients and their families the very best quality of life.
Contrary to popular belief, palliative care is good for you! But we won’t get this until we understand the catch.
Here is the catch, the big stink, the ultimate betrayal!
We are mortal, we are all going to die. There is no way out of this dilemma. Unless we understand, accept and realise that is neither our fault nor anyone else’s fault, we won’t be able to face death and appreciate the benefits of palliative care.
The role of palliative care is to make the transition from living to dying and ultimately death as easy as possible. However, this is a big task because dying is not easy.
