The digital revolution would still be stuck in 1996 if people around the world had not become, to some extent, assured of data and network security. Web usage would not have blossomed without willingness; that is, unless people had come to believe that the data they provide – both transactionally and unwittingly – were not secure. As we see again and again, the assurance that was built among the public at large was in some measure just a matter of getting used to things, rather than providing real proof that private data would remain private.
