The functioning of the respiratory center
Respiratory Center. a set of neurons located in all parts of the central nervous system and taking one or another involved in the regulation of respiration. The main part, or, as they say - the "core" of the respiratory center is, as has been proved experimentally Mislavsky, in the medulla oblongata, in the reticular formation, at the bottom of the fourth cerebral ventricle. Without this card can not be breathing, damage medulla leads inevitably to death because of respiratory failure.
There is no clear morphological section between the centers of inhalation and exhalation in the medulla does not exist, but there is a distribution of functions between neurons: one inspiratory neurons generate action potentials, stimulating the inspiratory muscles, while others excite expiratory expiratory muscles.
The inspiratory neurons, the electrical activity is activated quickly, gradually increasing pulsation frequency (up to 70 100 pulses per second) and falls off sharply at the end of inspiration. This impulses leads to a reduction of the diaphragm, intercostal and other inspiratory muscles. "Turning off the" inspiratory neurons leads to the relaxation of the inspiratory muscles and exhale. The activity of expiratory neurons in normal quiet breathing is less important. But with increased respiration, especially in forced expiratory, expiratory neurons determine expiratory muscle contraction.
