Early on running kept us fed and safe from predators. Since civilization developed, running has continued to serve as a means of recreation and exercise, and there is no need to expound upon the proven health benefits of regular exercise. So jogging exercise is a great idea, right? Yes, but not always; while the cardiovascular workout that running gives you is great for your heart, jogging exercise can do major damage to your knees and other joints if you push yourself too hard too quickly. It is important for joggers to know their bodies, to carefully and safely test their limits and to be able to respond to signals their bodies give them. You should also always start your jogging workout with a 10 minutes of stretching as a good jogging warmup. For this reason, it is a good idea to start slowly, and in a safe environment. Do a jogging warmup exercise. Jogging on pavement, especially when flat or sloped downward, can be very hard on your knees, especially if you do not have enough muscle built up already to properly absorb the massive shock of your body’s weight coming down repeatedly on your knees. So it is a good idea to start on a treadmill, preferably one that allows you to control the slope at which you are jogging.
