Hello,

I've tried downloading turnkey-observium-16.0-buster-amd64.ova 3 times and installed in ESXi 5.5 and ESXi 6.5.

In both cases it stops at the boot in the GRUB menu.

error: file '/boot/vmlinuz-4.19.0-8-amd64' not found

How can I correct it?

When trying to install from ISO I also have problems. I can't install GRUB on sda and can't finalize setup.

Somethings's missing in the two sets.

I did update some things for this release because users of newer VMware software had been complaining that our builds don't work with newer versions. So whilst it's a disappointment, I'm not super surprised that it doesn't work with v5.5. But I am surprised that you had issues with v6.0! I worked quite closely with an v6.0 ESXi/vSphere user to ensure that the OVA worked ok?!

Re the ISO issue, that's a known issue with VMware products. I was able to reproduce that even with VMware Workstation v15.5. I'm not sure why VMware has that issue as it works ok on VirtualBox and KVM?!

The workaround is to select "manual", then write in "/dev/sda" (don't select /dev/sda - that will still fail).

Hi Jeremy,

About the ISO:

Weirdly, using the "manual" option and writing "/dev/sda" (without the "") still keeps me in a loop in the "Finalize Install" menu. Opting for the final item "Finalize" throws me back to this menu all the time.

Rebooting brings me to the classic TurnKey GNU/Linux Configuration Console and everything seems normal...

About the install on ESXi 6.5, I'll try to upload some images of the ESXi web interface and the console.

The interesting part is that it states that the ova is good for ESXi 5.5, but in both versions (5.5. and 6.5) the problem is the same.

That's weird. It must have worked or otherwise the reboot wouldn't have worked?!

I'm not sure, but I suspect that the install filesystem has possibly been unmounted at that point.

FWIW, when I hit that (in VMware Player v15.5) IIRC I rebooted and reinstalled from scratch and it worked ok. When I get a chance, I should try to dig into why grub can't just auto install when used on VMware products but seems to work everywhere else?! I wonder if there is some VMware related virtual hardware driver that is a bit buggy in Debian Buster (the basis of v16.x)?

As to the OVA issue, I'm not at all clear on that. As I said, it "just works" in v15.5 VMware Player and another user assisted me with ESXi/vSphere testing and they reported that it worked fine on v6.0?!

Some screenshots might be useful to assist with troubleshooting. It might also be useful to see what the virtual hardware is that you're getting by default. It'd be good to compare the virtual disk controller of the ISO that you now have working (after fiddling) and the OVA VM that doesn't.

I'll deploy an ova under 5.5 and 6.5 and deploy an ISO also to the 6.5, taking screenshots.

BTW, I've tried adding screenshots to this post but they don't show up..

As you've likely seen, I've responded to your other thread.

TL; DR: I've reproduced your issue and will rebuild the Observium OVA.

I'll upload it and post a link both here and in the other thread.

In the ISO image, are the VMWare Tools already inside?

Should I just enable them or do I have to install them?

If I have to install, which VMWare Tools are you using for TKL 16?

If you want to install 'open-vm-tools" from the Debian repositories, you can do that like this:

apt update
apt install open-vm-tools

That will install v10.3.10 of the open source tools (as provided by VMware). There is a newer version (v11.0.5) available from backports if you'd rather. You'll need to enable backports to install from there. IIRC we actually include the backports repo in v16.0 (just disabled by default). So give this a try (fingers crossed it'll work):

mv etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-backports.list.disabled /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-backports.list

If that command works ok, then run these apt commands to install the newer backports version:

apt update
apt install -t buster-backports open-vm-tools

AFAIK there is also a 3rd option and that is to install via VMware themselves. As I'm not a regular VMware user I'm not exactly sure how you would go about that, but I'm pretty sure it's an option...

Hi Tom. Sorry but I only just noticed your unpublished post. The issue has been investigated and confirmed. 28 OVAs have been rebuilt and re-uploaded. So please re-download the OVA and you should be good to go...
