Idiot guide to file server?

Forum:

I was wondering if there was a good guide to setting up the file server, one which deals with configuring users and shares?  I've been fighting with TKL file server, to no avail.  My end goal is three separate shares, each accessable by different user groups (I'd prefer to manage at the level of groups, if at all possible, as some users may be in multiple groups).

LAMP stack on vmware and ProFTP

Forum:

I need step-by-step instruction how to setup access to the stack by FTP. I installed ProFTPD and made lots of moves to try to make login possible. No Google helped. All the time I got 530 error that password is wrong. I just need to login by FTP. How to make a user (preferebly root) to be able to login by FTP? Thanx.

FEDENA

Forum:

Hi there,

I have fully installed Fedena but everytime I want to access it, I have to run command and type "ruby script/server" so that I can log in to http://localhost:3000/

is there a way I can by pass this?

am new in this, I was just trying it out so a step by step procedure would be highly appreciated.

Mr Basil has given a link to solve this problem, but unfortunately this link is not opening. I hope some body will help me.

Thanks in advance

Adding host folders to file server

Forum:

I have the mediawiki and fileserver appliances running on a server at work.  The mediawiki is running perfectly, but I am having issues with the fileserver.  Both are being run by virtualbox, but what I cannot seem to achieve is "mounting" external folders such that they can be accessed by the fileserver VM.

Arrival date for Apache 2.2.21 in Turnkey Linux

Forum:

I have been notified by my security scan company that the current version of apache is on the non-PCI compliant listing.  I must move to apache 2.2.21 as soon as possible!  (Yeah, Right)  However, installing the debian package won't work because of an extremely long list of dependencies.  Is there any information on a new release based around apache 2.2.21 and is there a possible release date?

Are automatic security updates overwriting/changing permissions in the /var/log directory?

Forum:

I have a Turnkey LAPP appliance on which I installed Cacti. Cacti uses a poller technique and polling actions are written to /var/log/cacti/poller-error.log. Each weekend, something is changing the permissions on this file. The file should have permissions 775 (rwxrwxr-x) for cacti:www-data. Sometimes the permissions become root:root r--r--r--, sometimes www-data:www-data. Without the proper permissions for "Cacti", Cacti can't write to this log file and thus the graphs don't work.

Scheduling backups

Forum:

Hi,

Some servers we have run on a business line to the office so the upload isn't that great.

How would I change the backup scheduling to run incrementally then do a full backup every 4 weeks o a Saturday night.

I've re-scheduled the script for back ups on one server to run late at night (removed from cron.daily and set a specific cron entry)  - but this could still encroach on a working day as the full backup size increases.

cheers, Scott

Shell Works Great as Root

Bash works great as root.  Just as I'd expect.  However, with my created non-root user it acts badly.  Can't do basic stuff like tab to complete file names or even delete characters correctly.

Works totally fine as root though.  Any ideas?
