Welcome to TurnKey Linux! :)

TurnKey Hub API key

If you want a TurnKey Hub API key, please sign up over there (website and Hub accounts are separate). Signing up to the Hub will give you a free 14 day trial of our remote, encrypted Backup system (aka TKLBAM) and/or our Cloud servers.

Note that signing up to the Hub requires an AWS account. We do hope to support alternate cloud providers in the future, but currently all the services provided by the Hub are backed by AWS services. To allow the Hub access to your AWS account, you will need to create an AWS IAMs role. The Hub provides details of that during signup, but there are also AWS IAMs role creation docs for more info.

If you have any Hub specific questions or problems, please reach out to support via the little blue icon in the bottom right corner - or email support AT turnkeylinux.org.

To signup to the TurnKey forums, please read on...

TurnKey Linux website account approval.

Unfortunately due to overwhelming spammers we've had to disable automated account approval. To get your TurnKey website account approved, please post something in this thread to demonstrate that you are not a spammer. Here are some suggestions of what to include in your post:

  • Introduce yourself with a bit of info about who you are, where you come from, etc
  • How you found TurnKey and what brings to here
  • What you think about TurnKey Linux; what we're doing well and/or what we could do better
  • Features you'd like to see added to TurnKey
  • Which appliances you are using or interested in
  • Your TurnKey Linux use case and what you hope to do with your TurnKey servers
  • Details of problems you are having with a TurnKey server or questions about TurnKey Linux

Feel free to address as few or as many of them as you'd like. Please note that your post will not be visible until it is approved, so don't be concerned if it "disappears" after you click the button. Your account will be approved at the same time as your post.

We will try to approve accounts as quickly as we can, but please be patient. We're a relatively small team and always busy squirreling away in the background.

While you are waiting, please feel free to browse our documentation or read and respond to posts on our blog. If you have a bit of Linux knowledge, assisting others on the support forums is always welcome. Note that you can post comments on existing forum threads but until your account is enabled, they will need to be manually approved. Once your account is activated, you will be able to open new threads and posts will not require approval.

Hi :)
In https://www.turnkeylinux.org/mediawiki,
due to misconfiguration in ModEvasive,
search box autocomplete slow appears with randomly "access denied".
Please uncomment the default options in
/etc/apache2/mods-enabled/evasive.conf

Regards
Krzysztof Szwaba

Jeremy Davis's picture

Welcome to TurnKey and thanks for your post.

Perhaps an updated mod_evasive config now ships with the Debian package? I say that because originally the only tweak we made was to the logging - otherwise we used the default config provided by Debian (their defaults are usually sane). So I'd be interested to hear what changes you made.

FWIW, another user reported a similar issue with another appliance some time ago. We have since adjusted the mod_evasive config to not be so aggressive in our "common" build code. Unfortunately the MediaWiki appliance has not been rebuilt since we made that change.

That change should eliminate the issues you've noted with MediaWiki. I'd be interested to see how the change you've made compared to what we've done and/or hear whether our change also works for you.

I hope to do a batch of updates soon, so I will ensure that is rebuilt as part of that batch. I have also opened an issue on our tracker to test and ensure that the MediaWiki search box autocomplete works ok.

New user to turnkey. Just installed owncloud via proxmox helper scripts and was also looking at trying the nextcloud turnkey. Had issues with nextcloud AIO docker looking to simply for those who are not me that may have to work on my homelab in the future.

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi there and I'm glad to hear that our appliances are of value to you.

FWIW our Nextcloud appliance is much more popular than the ownCloud one. I'm sure that ownCloud works fine, but most users prefer Nextcloud.

Regardless, if you have TurnKey questions, problems, suggestions or other feedback, please open a new thread in the forums.

Hi there! I’ve just created an account and I’m waiting for approval. Looking forward to exploring TurnKey Linux and contributing to the community. Thanks in advance!

Jacob's picture

Hello! I was introduced to TurnKey when I was exploring the container templates included in Proxmox a couple years back. I immediately appreciated the ease in getting the applications running, the ease of management, and possibility of future expansion to a cloud based hosting solution, all while retaining the ability to customize the applications for my needs. Now, with several TurnKey containers running services for my home environment and my partner starting a small business, I am looking to explore the cloud backup/hosting solutions for additional off-site redundancy.

One feature on my wish list would be additional cloud options, such as Hetzner, Linode (Akamai), Cloudflare, etc..

Thanks for all the work that goes into TurnKey!

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Jacob. Thanks for sharing a bit about your journey with TurnKey to date. It's great that we might be able to assist you fulfilling your plans and goals.

Thanks for sharing your feedback too. We do hope to support other cloud providers in the TurnKey Hub. Although unfortunately we have no ETA so no promises when that might happen...

You may already know this but FYI the Hub backups don't require a Hub cloud server. TKLBAM (our backup tool) will work with a TurnKey server running anywhere - so long as it has outgoing internet access.

Also, just in case you haven't already signed up to the TurnKey Hub please head over there and do that. Then you can get your Hub API key and check out the available services. Unfortunately it's got a separate user database so the signup for that is an additional step (another thing we hope to tidy up in the future). On the plus side, Hub account activation is automated, so your won't need to wait longer for that to be approved.

If you have any Hub related problems, questions or more feedback, please reach out via the Hub support (blue icon in the bottom right corner of every page). I usually reply there within one work day. While on the Hub's free trial and if you continue with paid plan(s) I can also give basic one-on-one support over there - both with the Hub itself, but also with specific TurnKey appliances. If you have support requirements beyond what we include via the Hub, I'm also happy to discuss further support options.

Otherwise, for any TurnKey questions, problems or feedback just open a new thread.

Good luck with it all and hopefully see you about some more.

Oh one last thing. It's nowhere near as easy as launching a Hub server or running a local guest on Proxmox, but running TurnKey on many other cloud providers is possible. Some clouds support booting from an ISO. So download the ISO from our website and upload it to your alternate cloud providers storage. Then configure a new server to boot from the ISO and install. Then stop the server, unmount the ISO and start it up again.

Even if they don't support booting from ISO, many support uploading a custom root volume image. That requires creation of a custom TurnKey VM image locally - either on your Proxmox host or a TurnKey VM if you prefer. Then upload it and configure it as the main server root volume. FWIW we have a couple of paying Hub server plan subscribers (to support us & have access to our support) who actually run their servers elsewhere.

To be crystal clear, don't hold back on any complaints you might have or friction points you might hit. Often negative feedback is more valuable that positive.

Look forward to future chats. :)

Michael Burford's picture

This is Mike Burford or as most friends know me as Bueller from ferris bueller's day off. Got the nickname because I was on a retreat for a week during college and my professor called my lastname out like in the movie and from that week forward all my friends now call me Bueller.

I've been in Information Technology for maybe about 20 years now, most recently really started getting into the more advanced items. Well advanced to me but starting to get more into home lab setup, proxmox, turnkey etc.. and enjoying learning linux more and more / ssh / powershell etc.. I may not be super respondentant on forums as my home life and business life keep me very busy.

I currently work for a General Hospital as Access Control / Cybersecurity / Sharepoint / EntraID / Powerautomate etc...

I think i noticed someone saying they were from Aussie, my last job gave me many opportunities to discuss major network issues with a few Aussies on the phone. They were definitely some of the best, its where i got my "No worries" comment to everyone now from.

Anyways, i'll try to stay intuned on the forums as i learn alot from scouring the forums all over the web. So Cheers and No Worries have a great morning, afternooon or evening!

Hi,
As others here, I discovered Turnkey Linux while playing with proxmox. Love the concept, it reminds me of vagrant boxes. I would love to learn more and maybe even build my own.

Currently I'm playing with packer (but without the proxmox provisioner) , I'm using shell scripts to help me learn, and packer to automate my experiments.

I guess that's enough for now. Can I come in?

Hi
I am interested in Turnkey OpenLDAP. I managed to install the appliance recently. Now I'm curious about the AWS version and what it would take to connect to it from a machine on the internal network.
I'm not even sure at this stage if there is an AWS version of Turnkey OpenLDAP.

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Paul - deep apologies on my slow response...

Yes we have an AWS version - the quickest/easiest way to get it running is to sign up to the Hub and launch from there. Then you can have a play. If you have any Hub/AWS specific questions, please give me a ping via Hub support (I'll respond quicker there I promise!).

Ella Renner's picture

Hi everyone,

Looking to have my account approved please :)

Abit about me.

I've been using Turnkey Mediaserver for a while, so thank you to turnkey contributors.

I'm interested in genealogy and was wondering if this is the right place to ask if a new turnkey appliance for "Gramps Web"[1] so it can be used for collaboration?

Thanks
Ella

https://www.grampsweb.org/
https://github.com/gramps-project/gramps-web

Jeremy Davis's picture

Hi Ella, thanks for your kind words and glad to hear that our mediaserver is working for you. "Gramps Web" definitely sounds like it would make a cool appliance.

Unfortunately, we're pretty snowed under working on a major version update to our existing library (hence why this reply is so slow) so I'm not sure when we might be able to have a closer look at it. Although if you've got any Linux knowledge, then perhaps you could have a go at it yourself? You really only need basic bash knowledge and a little python is also helpful.

I'm happy to give you a bit of guidance if need be - although I can't guarantee how timely it might be...

[update] Actually, I just had a closer look at the install steps for "Gramps Web" and unfortunately the only "supported" install is using docker. Currently Turnkey doesn't have facility to install software distributed as a docker container. It is on the road map, but isn't yet built in. We hope to resolve that ASAP but there is no ETA and we're currently juggling quite a few different priorities so I can't even give you a vague idea of when it might be ready.

Ella Renner's picture

Thank you for checking. I will wait.

I await approval, thanks :-)

Hello Turnkey team! I'm pretty new to the realm of self-hosting and home labs. I've just installed Proxmox and TrueNAS and I'm trying to figure out how to get GitLab onto the thing. I was going to install it onto a VM following the official GitLab self-hosting instructions but it's a bit of a novel, so I learned about Turnkey. A bit stuck since the initial download is an .ISO instead of a CT template but I'm working on it!

Jeremy Davis's picture

You will need to download the ISO first, then you can create a new VM (not container) and boot from the ISO to do the install. Having said that, our GitLab appliance is getting a bit dated. Hopefully we'll have an updated release not too far away but I can't give an ETA sorry.
